Kamoku Hero

Your questions, answered by a cat who prefers a soft blanket, a quiet room, and zero drama.

Dear Kamoku,
My roommate always wants to talk the second I walk in the door. I’m exhausted. How do I set boundaries without being rude?
Wants Quiet, Not Conflict

Dear Quiet,
Ah, the ambush greeting. I simply walk away and blink slowly from a safe distance. Try silence, followed by a warm beverage and a stare that says, “Now is not the time.” Works every time.

Dear Kamoku,
I feel pressure to be super social at work, but I’m more of an introvert. Any tips for surviving open office life?
Cubicle Catastrophe

Dear Cubicle,
Stake out a corner. Guard it like a cardboard box. Participate on your terms—pop up for a few wand-toy moments (aka meetings), then retreat. It’s not antisocial. It’s strategic.

Dear Kamoku,
I overcommit to everything. I’m tired, cranky, and I haven’t had a weekend to myself in months.
Burnt Out in Boots

Dear Burnt,
Cancel three things. Right now. Say you’re “recharging your paw batteries.” Then stretch out in a sunbeam, mentally and physically. If it doesn’t bring peace or snacks, it can wait.

Bonus Tip from Kamoku:
Need a soft presence in your space, not a whirlwind of neediness? I qualify for the Foster First program. Try me out! No pressure, no pushiness, just purrs (eventually).

Sparky Hero

Looking to add a gentle, loyal, and tennis-ball-obsessed pup to your life? Meet Sparky! He’s a one-year-old sweetheart who’s discovering the joys of being a dog after a rough start. He’s shy at first, but with time, patience, and a few well-placed tennis balls, Sparky will blossom into your most devoted companion.

Here’s your guide to making Sparky feel at home:

Step 1: Set the Scene for Calm and Comfort

Sparky thrives in a quiet, predictable home. He’s looking for a calm environment with a patient person who understands that trust takes time. Loud noises and sudden movements might startle him, so a peaceful setting will help him settle in and feel safe.

Bonus tip: A cozy corner with a soft bed, gentle music, and a steady routine will go a long way.

Step 2: Build Trust with Gentle Consistency

Sparky may be cautious when he first meets new people but don’t worry. With kindness and a little time, he begins to open up. Once he knows you’re safe, you’ll see his affectionate side: he loves being brushed, petted, and snuggled.

Pro tip: Let Sparky set the pace. Sit with him, offer treats, and give him time. The loyalty you’ll earn is worth every minute.

Step 3: Enjoy the Simple Joys

When Sparky plays fetch, his whole face lights up. Tennis balls are his jam. A fenced-in backyard where he can run and play at his own speed? That’s heaven for him. He also enjoys peaceful walks, soaking in the smells and sights of the neighborhood at a relaxed pace.

Step 4: Be There, Especially at First

Sparky is looking for someone who’s around a lot in the beginning. Someone who can help him settle into his new life with reassurance and structure. Once he finds his rhythm, his confidence will grow. And when he curls up next to you on the couch, you’ll know you’re his safe place.

While we still can’t share any details because this is an ongoing case, we want you to know that some of the dogs are now in our care. Over the holiday weekend, our team worked tirelessly to give them warm baths, nutritious meals, and much-needed veterinary treatment.

We’ll continue to update when we’re able.

Our rescue team is on the ground right now responding to a heartbreaking case involving more than 40 dogs living in unimaginable conditions.

This is one of the worst neglect cases we’ve seen.

We can’t share many details just yet, but what we can tell you is this: these dogs need urgent care, and they need love. And we’re making sure they receive both.

Your donation right now helps us provide emergency medical treatment, warm beds, full bowls, and the start of a brand new life.

We’ll share more with you as soon as we can. For now, please be part of their rescue story.

Douglas Hero

When Douglas first arrived at Atlanta Humane Society, it was clear he had a long road ahead of him. His body trembled with fear, his eyes darted at every movement, and the simple act of stepping outside his kennel was overwhelming. He had experienced deep stress and anxiety, and everything about the world felt uncertain and unsafe.

Even a walk was filled with panic. Douglas was terrified of thresholds like doorways, and constantly hypervigilant, scanning for danger that might not even exist.

But Douglas wasn’t alone.

Our Behavior Team immediately stepped in, recognizing that what Douglas needed most wasn’t just time. It was tailored, compassionate support. Our specialized trainers and behaviorists designed a plan that addressed his specific fears. Step by step, they worked with Douglas to build trust, offering patience, consistency, and a safe environment to help him heal.

Over time, the trembling stopped. He began to look to his trainer for guidance. One day, he walked outside. Another day, he accepted affection.

Today, Douglas is a different dog. He plays. He snuggles. He smiles. The same dog who once shook in fear now rests his head gently on the lap of the people who helped him rediscover safety and joy.

Douglas’ story is a powerful reminder of why our Behavior Team exists. Every animal that enters our doors comes with a unique history, and it’s our commitment to meet them exactly where they are.

Today, Douglas is available for adoption. After all his progress and the love he’s learned to accept, he’s waiting for a home where he can continue to blossom.

We’re excited to share an important milestone for animal welfare in Georgia. The Atlanta Humane Society has received a $2.5 million grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation to support a transformative statewide initiative that enhances animal protection, disaster response, and community outreach across all 159 Georgia counties.

This funding marks a major advancement in our mission and will allow us to:

  • Add 150 new housing units for emergency sheltering during disasters and cruelty cases
  • Expand cruelty investigations and disaster response coalitions into Georgia’s 61 underserved counties
  • Deliver critical resources—including veterinary care, pet food, and training—to shelters, rescues, and pet families across the state

This partnership strengthens our ability to act faster, respond smarter, and support communities more deeply than ever before.

We’re grateful for the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation’s visionary investment in a more compassionate Georgia, and for your continued support as we lead this statewide movement forward.

Mathias Hero

Mathias is a refined dog with strong opinions. And many of them.

While he waits patiently (and adorably) for his forever home, Mathias has taken it upon himself to review the many experiences life has to offer. Here are some of his five-star (and not-so-five-star) ratings from his personal “Yelp” log:

The Couch ★★★★★

Mathias describes this as “the pinnacle of plush living.” Whether it’s for a quick nap, a full day of lounging, or a prime location to sneak in some stealth snuggles, the couch is a daily must. Bonus points for blanket access and human proximity.

Cheese Cubes ★★★★★

If there were six stars, he’d give them. Mathias believes cheese is a universal love language. Unfortunately, he’s on a special diet, so his access is very limited, but he dreams often, and vividly.

Walks at Piedmont Park ★★★★☆

Mathias absolutely lives for the phrase, “Wanna go outside?” Piedmont Park is his kingdom. The smells! The squirrels! The possibility of dropped fries! He loses one star only because other dogs sometimes harsh his vibe. But he’s working on that.

Car Rides ★★★★★

The wind in his fur, the scent of takeout through the window, and the thrill of destination unknown. Mathias is a ride-or-die kind of guy. Passenger prince status: fully embraced.

Sweet-Talking Someone Else’s Pet ★☆☆☆☆

Strongly discouraged. Mathias believes love should be exclusive (or at least whispered out of earshot). Just saying.

Final Thoughts from Mathias

If you’re looking for a dog with taste, charm, and a strong commitment to comfort and affection, Mathias is ready to leave his Yelp career behind and settle into a forever home. Preferably one with snacks, snuggles, and a no-dog drama policy.

Interested in booking the full Mathias experience? He’s ready for his five-star family.

Benni’s mom was facing an impossible situation.

She had just moved to Georgia from out of state and was staying in short-term rentals that didn’t allow pets. Then she got the call no one wants to get—her mother’s health was rapidly declining, and she needed to get to New York immediately to support her through end-of-life care.

With nowhere safe for Benni to stay and no time to waste, she turned to us for help.

Through our Pets in Crisis Support program, Benni was placed in a temporary foster home where he was loved and cared for while his mom was away. Knowing Benni was safe allowed her to focus on being there for her family during an incredibly difficult time.

Now, Benni’s mom has returned to Georgia and the two have been reunited.
