Cricket update hero
Update as of June 30, 2025:

Little Cricket recently had a check up with our Shelter Medicine Team, and she is making real progress. Her injured leg looks better every day, and she’s now able to stand and put weight on it.

We have decided to leave the leg unwrapped so she can start using it and build back her muscle. While amputation is still a possibility, each day we’re moving further away from that option.

This wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community, and her foster home.

Cricket Hero Image

Cricket weighs just 1 pound. And her tiny knee is broken.

She was rescued from a case involving more than 30 cats living inside a single home. Now, Cricket is in our care but her recovery will take time, and she needs ongoing support to heal.

Animals like Cricket need more than rescue. They need a team of people who are willing to help.

Your gift today helps provide urgent veterinary care, pain relief, soft bedding, and the daily support Cricket needs during her recovery. Without you, kittens like Cricket won’t get the second chance they deserve.

Please give now and join us on Cricket’s recovery team.

The pet that had us all laughing!

“Ollie was adopted from AHS in 2017 and has been the happiest, funniest and snuggliest pup for our family ever since! He was found with a broken leg when he was just 2 month old! After nurturing him back to health as a foster pup, we couldn’t give him up and adopted him shortly after! There’s not a day that goes by that Ollie doesn’t make us laugh! He’s such a joy!!”

For the pet whose grin could melt hearts!

“Fred is an 8 month old bundle of sweetness who never meets a stranger. Born on an Indiana farm, he was part of a “Scooby Doo” themed litter of puppies and from birth, has always had a mind of his own. He waited until all his siblings were born AND the family left the house to decide he was ready to join the fun. When the family returned from their birthday party, they found an extra “surprise” waiting for them, all cleaned up and resting comfortably! It was Fred! Still independent and fearless today but can’t resist a good snuggle!”

Paws down the most fashionable!

“Franklin is an almost 3-year-old Shih Tzu mix with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He lives for playdates with his pup pals, hopping in the car for any adventure, and expertly locating the squeaker in every toy he meets. When he’s not on the move, you’ll find him curled up watching reality TV. Franklin is equal parts cuddle bug and curious explorer, always ready to love and be loved.”

Because beauty sleep is serious business.

“Petunia was adopted to help our elderly cat have a friend and quickly became the center of attention and brought new energy to her sister. Her sister has since passed away and she continues to sleep in her bed every day. “

For the pet serving serious style with every strand.

“Neville Hotspur was rescued from underneath a car in front of me at a McDonald’s drive-thru. He fit into my hand. His veterinarian said he was only about five weeks old and weighed 1.2 pounds. He started out as a short haired tabby but grew into a magnificent long haired lion with a full mane and glamorous tail. Friends have said he could be a cover model for feline romance novels. Neville Hotspur is trained to walk on a leash and loves exploring the wild kingdom of his yard. He is love wrapped in fur.”

Thank You for Supporting the Animals

Thanks to your votes and donations, this year’s Cutest Pet Contest raised vital funds to support pets in need right here in our community. Every dollar helps us provide medical care, food, enrichment, and the love and support animals deserve.

But your impact also goes beyond the animals. It uplifts the people who love them, too. We can’t run programs like Pets in Crisis Support or offer low-cost vaccine clinics without the compassion and generosity of our supporters.

P.S. There’s more…

Looking for a dog who checks all the boxes? Athena is the perfect mix of playful energy and laid-back charm. She’s always up for a walk around the neighborhood, a hike on the trail, or a game of fetch in the yard—and just as happy to wind down with some good snuggles at the end of the day.

Athena walks beautifully on leash and loves exploring the world with her people by her side. She’s great with adults, kids, and other dogs, and would be thrilled to meet any furry friends you already have at home.

Smart, affectionate, and eager to please, Athena is the kind of dog who easily fits into your routine. Playful when it’s time for fun, mellow when it’s time to relax.

Best of all? Athena qualifies for our Foster First program, so you can bring her home for a 14-day trial to see if she’s the perfect fit… no pressure, just love.

January’s arrived at a rural shelter shy, pregnant, and unsure of what was next. Just days later, she gave birth to 11 puppies. All of her puppies have since found homes. And now, it’s January’s turn.

In foster care, January has had the space and support to rest, recover, and grow into the affectionate, playful dog she is today. She’s blossomed with routine, care, and companionship and now she’s ready for a home of her own.

January is the perfect mix of energetic and easygoing. She enjoys walks and outdoor exploring but is just as happy curling up on the couch next to her favorite person. She’s affectionate, gentle, and always up for a cuddle.

She’s food-motivated, eager to learn, and friendly with new people. While she’s learned to handle alone time, she really shines when she’s close to her humans. She’d do best as the only pet in the home where she can soak up all the love and attention.

If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion who’s ready for her fresh start, January might be the one.

Come meet her at our shelter. She’ll be waiting, tail wagging.

Is Your Pet Drinking More Water Than Usual? Increased thirst is often one of the first signs pet owners notice in dogs or cats who are later diagnosed with diabetes. Just like in humans, diabetes in pets is a metabolic disorder caused by a problem with insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels).

There are two main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1: The pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin (more common in dogs).
  • Type 2: The body becomes resistant to insulin (more common in older, overweight cats).
Causes and Risk Factors

Diabetes can be genetic or caused by underlying health conditions like Cushing’s disease, chronic pancreatitis, or adrenal disorders. Some breeds are more susceptible—according to the American Kennel Club, high-risk breeds include: Miniature Poodles, Bichon Frises, Pugs, Dachshunds, Miniature Schnauzers, Beagles, and more.

Other risk factors include:

  • Obesity
  • Age (middle-aged to older pets are more at risk)
  • Long-term use of steriod medications
  • For dogs: being an unspayed female may double the risk
Symptoms to Watch For

Keep an eye out for these signs in both dogs and cats:

  • Increased thirst – drinking noticeably more water than usual
  • Increased urination
  • Increased appetite – but possible weight loss
  • Lethargy
  • Vision Problems – including cataracts in dogs
  • Loss of appetite – especially in cats

If your pet seems off, schedule a visit with your veterinarian. A simple blood and urine test can check glucose levels and help determine whether diabetes—or another condition—is to blame.

Managing Diabetes in Pets

The good news: with early diagnosis and proper treatment, many pets with diabetes live long, happy lives.
Treatment options may include:

  • Daily insulin injections
  • Prescription diets and feeding schedules
  • Oral medications (in some cases)
  • Weight management and regular exercise
  • Ongoing glucose monitoring

Every pet is different, so it’s important to work closely with your veterinarian to create a treatment plan tailored to your pet’s needs. Routine checkups and consistency at home are key to keeping diabetes under control.

If your perfect weekend plans involve a cozy blanket, a good book, and a warm feline by your side, Silina might be the nap buddy you never knew you needed.

She’s a soft, independent girl who’s mastered the balance between affection and alone time. While she’s not one to demand constant attention, she does love to curl up near you, especially when you’re reading, working, or packing for a trip (she’s an excellent quiet supervisor).

Silina’s favorite hobbies include:

– Finding the best sun spot by the window

– Rolling over for long, gentle pets (when she’s in the mood)

– Balancing like a champ while chasing strings

– Quietly keeping you company as you go about your day

She’s also been doing a great job on her fitness journey by cutting back on food and still staying agile enough to show off her sneaky pounce and toy-catching skills.

While Silina has lived with other cats before, she’s definitely more comfortable as the star of the show. She’d do best as your one-and-only, or possibly with a very slow introduction to a mellow roommate. As for dogs? She hasn’t met any yet, but would likely be okay as long as they give her space.

Silina doesn’t ask for much. Just a quiet home, a few cozy nap spots, and someone who understands that love sometimes looks like a soft purr from across the couch. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, loyal companion who will always be down for a nap and a cuddle on her terms, Silina could be your perfect match.

Come meet her at our Marietta location and see if this laid-back lady is the one for you.

Stix: “Grills everything. Yes, even kibble.”

Stix is the guy who brings the energy, the charm, and probably a tennis ball to your backyard BBQ. He’s playful, affectionate, and always down for a good time—then crashes hard on the couch once the fun’s done.

Schnorey: “Has a favorite chair and no one else can sit in it.”

Schnorey is a quiet, old-soul kind of guy who enjoys the simple pleasures. He’s a bit shy at first, but once you earn his trust, he’s warm, loyal, and always nearby… usually in his spot.

Ferendi DSCF2230 Square
Ferendi: “Coaches every sport. Yes, even fetch.”

Ferendi is your go-to guy for backyard drills, driveway training sessions, and ball control that would make a soccer coach jealous. His fetch game is elite. He’ll dribble the ball back with his nose like it’s the World Cup.

Louie: “Turns off all the lights and says, ‘We’re not made of money!’”

Louie is the chill, no-nonsense type who keeps things cozy and calm. But he’s also keeping an eye on the electric bill. He’s the king of comfort, a master of naps, and the type to follow you from room to room… just to turn the lights off behind you.

Sandy DSCF5525 Square
Sandy: “Blasts classic rock with the windows down.”

Serenity with toy Squared
Serenity: “Carries a tool belt just in case.

Serenity loves Home Depot and is your resident fixer-upper. She is always ready to lend a paw, tighten a loose screw (or maybe just carry her toys like tools), and make sure everything’s running smoothly. She’s clever, resourceful, and probably knows where the remote is.

More about Serenity

Demi Square
Demi: “Has a favorite spot on the couch to snooze in but she swears she was awake the whole time.”

Demi’s the cozy companion who always claims her spot and settles in like she pays rent. She’s sweet, mellow, and happiest when she’s close to her people—even if she’s mid-snore when you try to start a conversation.

They were being evicted and facing an uncertain future.

Without a stable place to live, they knew they couldn’t provide the safe and consistent care that Bella needed. But giving her up permanently was out of the question. Bella was family.

Through our Pets in Crisis Support Program, Bella was placed in a temporary foster home. While her family worked to regain stability, she was safe, cared for, and surrounded by people who made sure she knew she was loved.

When the day finally came for Bella to go home, she knew it.

She ran down the hallway to her family with joyful wiggles and excited cries, overcome with emotion. Their reunion was full of tail wags, happy tears, and the unspoken relief of being together again.

Support like this is only possible because of fosters who step up to care for pets in their time of need. When you open your heart and your home, you help keep pets safe and their families whole, even during life’s hardest chapters.

Stella Hero

There’s a quiet kind of magic in Stella. She’s not flashy. She doesn’t demand attention. But spend even five minutes in her presence and you’ll feel it—that soft, steady energy that only comes from a cat who has known both hardship and love and still chooses affection every time.

At 12 years old, Stella is what we lovingly call an “old soul.” She moves a little slower these days thanks to some arthritis and she’s managing chronic kidney disease with the grace and patience of someone who has figured out what really matters: soft beds, sunny windows, peaceful company, and the joy of simply being near someone who cares.

Stella doesn’t need to be in your lap. She just wants to be in your life. She’s the kind of cat who will sit next to you while you read, nap nearby while you work, and offer little nudges of affection just to let you know she’s there. She loves people—truly loves them—and meeting someone new is still one of her favorite things.

Her medical needs are manageable and our team is here to help guide you through her care. What she’s really looking for is someone who won’t overlook her just because she’s a little older. Someone who sees the beauty in calm companionship and the gift of every quiet moment shared.

Stella is currently spending her days at our Marietta location, where you’re welcome to stop by and meet her in person. She’d love the company. Come spend a little time with her. Let her sit beside you. You just might find she’s been the one you’ve been waiting for all along.
