Fostering kittens can be so much fun! Watch our short video on fostering kittens for the Atlanta Humane Society.

Cat Supplies

Foster kittens don’t need much space, so your spare bathroom or bedroom is perfect for caring for them.

Litters with a mom are easiest for beginners since mom does most of the work for you.

Orphaned litters are a bit more work but you’ll form a special bond with them as you nurse and care for them.

Daily kitten care includes feeding, weighing, cleaning, and lots of playing.

Our team of kitten care experts is here to support you and can answer any questions you have. Please contact us with any questions!

Ms. B lived her entire life in a loving home, but when her owner’s health began to decline, so did Ms. B’s. Tragically, her owner passed away and left Ms. B without a family to call her own.

Labrador Retriever with skin condition being petted

When Ms. B arrived at the Atlanta Humane Society with red, inflamed skin and an infected injury to her ear that was starting to become necrotic, our Shelter Medicine team rushed to administer pain medication, antibiotics, joint supplements, and more. She needs medicated baths three times per week to help her skin condition heal as well.

Having only ever lived with her late owner, this sweet girl is terrified of human interaction and is learning how to be loved again. When her owner passed away, her whole world changed, but we are determined to help her body and heart heal.

Lady wearing a mask kissing a puppy

It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week, the time each year when we pause to acknowledge the tremendous impact made by members of our community who never ask for recognition or reward.

This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Week feels especially significant and sentimental for us, as we reflect on what our volunteers mean to us and all that they made possible during some of the most difficult times in recent memory.

A little over one year ago, our volunteers were as frightened as we were and uncertain about the future. Despite all the personal difficulties they may have faced, our volunteers still made time for the animals. They checked on us, helped deliver goods and services to needy families and pets, opened their homes to foster our animals, made sure animals received medical care, and helped our team in any way we asked without a moment’s hesitation.

Their passion, selflessness, and willingness to help allowed us to continue giving back to our greater community during a historic hardship, and they made it possible for us to slowly reopen our doors and look forward again to the future. Our volunteers gave us great comfort, security, and hope.

The Atlanta Humane Society is a great and giving organization because we are inspired and supported by a great and giving community, and because of our volunteers, we can continue to make a difference in this community we love so much.

Dog sits in outdoor kennel

Late last week, our Animal Protection Unit was deployed to a cruelty case in south Georgia, where a large number of dogs were found living in deplorable, neglectful conditions. Our team acted swiftly to examine and remove 33 of the dogs from the location and bring them back to safety.

The dogs range in age from day-old puppies to 6-year-old adult dogs, and the breeds vary widely but include pit bulls, Yorkshire Terriers, Golden Retriever mixes, and more. Many are scared and under socialized, and others are facing debilitating medical conditions.

This is an active and ongoing criminal case, and our team is working diligently with the Police Chief to ensure those responsible for this senseless cruelty are held accountable. Your support is urgently needed now to provide medical care and support to these 33 dogs who desperately needed to be rescued.

She didn’t do anything wrong, but despite her constant purrs and devotion, Ester was abandoned. We don’t know her exact age, but she is one of the oldest cats to ever landed in our care.

We found her fur matted with feces, other bits of fur missing, and her joints aching beyond belief. Both her sight and hearing are beginning to fail due to her age and a lack of proper care. But, we held her close and assured her that she’s safe with us now.

We gave her a bath, ran diagnostic tests, and performed a much-needed dental cleaning before sending her to a loving Atlanta Humane Society foster home. There, she will be loved and cared for around-the-clock as she begins to heal from past neglect.

Despite the fact that Ester was abandoned, she is the sweetest cat. This sweetheart will crawl into anyone’s lap and nuzzle them for extra petting. She deserves the most comfortable end-of-life care possible, and we are determined to make sure she gets exactly what she needs.

Your support makes it possible for us to provide high-quality, compassionate care to animals like Ester, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Ester will be available soon once her skin begins to improve, so keep an eye on our adoptable cat pages!

We received an urgent call from a local animal control facility about a puppy in need, and we knew we had to help. From the moment she arrived, it was clear that little Asuna needed surgery.

While we don’t know exactly what caused her injury, her fracture caused her a lot of pain and discomfort. After examining her x-rays, our Shelter Medicine Team determined that Asuna would need an orthopedic specialist to save her leg.

Our friends at VCA Roswell were more than happy to assist Asuna, and they scheduled her for a consultation and the special surgery she desperately needed. They showed her such love and compassion- we knew she was in great hands.

It just didn’t seem fair- at just 3-months-old, little Asuna should be running around playing, romping, and learning about the world. Instead, every step caused her to limp in pain. But, because of your support and our friends at VCA, Asuna never gave up hope.

Her surgery was successful, and the doctor was able to save her leg! She is currently recovering in a loving foster home where she’ll rest and work to regain her strength. Once healed, this sweet girl will be available for adoption.

Noella is a sweet, 8-month-old kitten who came to the Atlanta Humane Society when her previous owner could not care for her any longer. When she arrived, our Shelter Medicine Team immediately noticed that she was limping significantly on her back left leg.

Noella’s broken leg turned out to be much worse than we imagined. The break was so severe that the bone nearly protruded through her skin, so we immediately scheduled her for surgery.

Our veterinarians decided to amputate Noella’s broken leg to give her the best possible quality of life. Her surgery was a success thanks to our expert medical staff. She recovered in a loving foster home and adjusted to life on three legs like a champ!

It wasn’t long before Noella’s sweet, soulful eyes caught the attention of a loving family. They searched for the perfect cat to add to their home, and finally found Noella. One day very soon, Noella will spend each day with her wonderful new family, and her life will never be the same!

Sick pitbull puppy with parvovirus

Last month, our friends at a local animal control agency called us about 11 puppies that were dumped on a property. Unfortunately, the majority of the puppies tested positive for parvovirus, a deadly illness that can be lethal if not treated immediately.

Puppy with parvovirus getting an examination

Treating parvovirus requires a large amount of care and, in a hospital setting, treatment can cost over $1,000 per puppy. Because the animal control agency lacked these resources, we stepped in to give the puppies a second chance.

The puppies were transported to the Atlanta Humane Society, where they were immediately quarantined and examined by our expert Shelter Medicine team. Our staff provided round-the-clock care while the puppies battled the illness and received fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, and more.

And now, we are overjoyed to share that almost all of the puppies have been adopted. All 11 puppies had severe cases, and 3 of them sadly succumbed to the deadly virus, but because of you, the other 8 puppies are now thriving! Your support truly saw them through the darkest days, and we are so deeply grateful for that.

Pictured above is Edin, one of the brave survivors who found her loving forever home!

Our Animal Protection Unit was called to a location in Fort Valley, Georgia to rescue multiple cats after their owner passed away. The team went to the site and removed 14 cats and kittens from the home and brought them back to Atlanta for evaluation.
The cats range in age from young kittens to adults, and some have medical conditions that need our immediate attention. The kittens are very young and being placed into foster care, where they will receive expert, around-the-clock care.
Now, we need your help to give these cats the support and medical care they so desperately need. When you give today, your tax-deductible donation – up to $75,000 – will be triple matched.
