Summer is a fun time – we love to hang out with our friends, family, and of course, our furry friends. However, summer can pose threats to the health and safety of our dogs and cats.

It is important to avoid dangerous situations to keep your pets as safe as possible but with a few precautions for your pet’s safety, summer’s a great time of year for him too!

Annabel Pet Safety

Here are some safety measures to take over the summer with your pets:

Be mindful of the heat

Plan to take your dogs for their walks during the cooler hours of the day, like early morning or evening. Keep exercise to a minimum in the heat and always provide fresh water. If you feel it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dogs.

Check the asphalt

Remember, asphalt absorbs heat, and that black pavement can scorch your dog’s tender feet. Some pet parents like to put shoes or boots on their dogs to protect their feet, others just avoid the pavement. If you place your hand on the pavement and it’s too hot for you, yep, it’s too hot for your pooch.

Offer healthy, refreshing snacks

Just like we love our popsicles and ice pops, our four-legged friends love a good refreshing treat, too. You can freeze fruits like blueberries and bananas for your pup either alone or in cups of water for them to lick outside.

Leave them home when you run your errands

Even a minute or two in a hot car can be deadly for a pet. Heat stroke can happen fast. Never leave a pet in a parked car.

If the air temperature outside is 90 degrees, it only takes ten minutes to reach 109 and 30 minutes to reach 124 degrees. In less than 15 minutes, pets can succumb to heatstroke.

Keep your flat-faced or elderly pets inside

Flat-faced pets like Persian cats, pugs, and bulldogs are susceptible to overheating due to their facial structure. Elderly pets and those with other health issues have more trouble in the heat, so let them stay inside during the hot, humid days of summer.

Know the signs of overheating

Warmer temperatures put dogs at more risk for heat-related illness such as heat exhaustion, sunstroke or hyperthermia. A number of factors bump up the risk for some dogs, for example: large size, thick or long coat, flat-faced, overweight, or older dogs and those with underlying health conditions such as dehydration or breathing issues.

Signs of distress include heavy panting, tiredness, confusion, drooling, even collapsing. If you’re concerned about heatstroke in your pet, do not delay – he needs to be cooled down immediately – move him to the shade, provide a cool floor in air-conditioning or fans, offer water, cool water sponge bath focusing on neck and tummy. Most importantly, talk to your vet.

Play in the hose

An easy way to keep your pet cool while running out their energy is by letting them have a small pool to roll around in or a little sprinkler to play in.

Flea and tick/heartworm prevention

We see an increase in those little critters during the warmer months, so be sure to keep your pets on their heartworm and flea and tick prevention.

Be snake aware

Summer is snake season and it just takes one curious sniff to get a bite. Keep your pets out of overgrowth or bushes, that’s where snakes may love to hide. Be aware that snakes love to soak up that asphalt heat and often are basking on the roads after dark. Take a light with you for nighttime walks so you don’t stumble over a snake.

Update as of August 20th, 2024:

We’re excited to share a heartwarming update on Sausage, now affectionately renamed Mars. Mars has settled into his new home wonderfully! He’s incredibly happy, has a huge appetite, and is very active. After making a full recovery from his surgery, Mars is now focusing on building stability as he enjoys running around and playing.

His new family fell in love with him immediately, and Mars has quickly proven to be a perfect match for them. They describe him as comforting, playful, and gentle, with a huge personality and a great heart. Mars has brought so much joy and love into their lives, and they knew from the start that he was the one for them.

Here are some of our favorite photos of Mars in his new home!

Sausage’s story begins with his rescue from the streets by an animal control agency. This adorable pup, estimated to be only 8-10 months old, was severely underweight at just 28 pounds. His condition was a clear sign that he had faced a tough start in life.

When the shelter reached out for help, we knew we couldn’t turn Sausage away.

Upon his arrival, our Shelter Medicine team discovered that Sausage was suffering from a bone infection, anemia, swollen elbows—a common condition in dogs kept in wire cages—along with poor skin and severely damaged teeth for his age.

Despite these hardships, Sausage’s kind eyes and gentle demeanor shone through, revealing a sweet but nervous soul in need of love and care.

We have started Sausage on a medical plan that we are sure will give him what he needs to get healthy and thrive.

Part of this includes placing him in a foster home, where he can receive the dedicated care and attention he deserves in a comforting environment. This will not only help him physically but also emotionally, as he learns to trust and feel safe again.

Sausage’s journey to recovery is just beginning, and with your support, we can ensure he and many other animals like him receive the care they need. Your generous donation to Atlanta Humane will help us provide medical treatment, nutritious food, and a safe haven for animals who have nowhere else to turn.

Please consider making a donation today to give animals like Sausage a second chance at a happy and healthy life. Together, we can make a difference.

Teddy in Kayak

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Teddy, an adorable and adventurous dog currently looking for her forever home. Teddy is a delightful mix of energy and relaxation, and she’s eager to share a bit about herself.

From her love of meeting new people to her joy in outdoor activities, Teddy has a lot to offer to the right family. Let’s dive into our conversation with Teddy and learn more about what makes her such a special companion.

Atlanta Humane: Hi Teddy! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us today. Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

Teddy: Hi there! I’m Teddy, a perfect mix of energy and chill. I love going on exciting adventures and then curling up for a cozy snuggle session. There’s nothing better than being active and then relaxing with my favorite humans.

Atlanta Humane: That sounds wonderful! How do you feel about meeting new people?

Teddy: I get so excited when I meet new people! I have a friendly and curious nature, and I absolutely love making new friends. Meeting new people brings so much joy to my day!

Atlanta Humane: What about other pets? Have you had a chance to make some furry friends?

Teddy: While I haven’t had the chance to interact with other pets up close, I’m always friendly and interested in getting to know them. With proper introductions and some socialization, I’m sure we can be furry friends in no time.

Atlanta Humane: It’s great that you’re open to new friendships! Now, let’s talk about your favorite things. What do you love the most?

Teddy: Oh, I absolutely love being petted! It’s one of my favorite things in the world. I actively seek out those moments of affection and crave the warmth of human touch. There’s nothing quite like a good belly rub or a gentle scratch behind the ears. And cuddling on the couch or snuggling up in bed are my ultimate favorite things. I’m a total love bug and thrive on human connection.

Atlanta Humane: You really sound like the perfect companion! What makes you special, Teddy?

Teddy: Well, I’m an absolute joy to have around. I can hang out with you while you work without making a peep, or I can accompany you on a long hike. My foster often takes me hiking and kayaking, and I absolutely love it! I’m always up for an outdoor adventure and make a great partner for someone who loves to get outdoors. If you’re looking for a dog who will love you just as much as you love her, look no further—I’m your girl.

Atlanta Humane: You truly are a special dog, Teddy. What kind of family do you think would be the best fit for you?

Teddy: I can fit right into any family, but I do recommend a situation where someone can always be around me. While I’m housebroken and well-behaved when left alone for short periods, I thrive on companionship and truly enjoy being around my humans.

Atlanta Humane: Thanks for sharing, Teddy. Is there anything else you’d like to say to potential adopters?

Teddy: If you’re searching for an affectionate and loyal companion who will bring endless joy and love into your life, and who will join you on all your outdoor adventures, I’m here, ready to be your best friend. I can’t wait to meet my new family and start our adventures together!

Adopting Teddy means gaining a loving and loyal friend for life, who’s always ready for the next adventure. If you think Teddy might be the perfect addition to your family, come meet her today and see for yourself just how special she is!

More lost pets enter county shelters after July 4th than any other day of the year. Don’t let your pet become a statistic.

This American tradition is an exciting and fun way to celebrate Independence Day but, not surprisingly, our pets don’t typically feel the same.

Firework displays are loud and unexpected, causing stress and anxiety in most pets. Their acute hearing makes them more sensitive to the booms and flashing lights, and the odor fireworks give off contribute to the confusion.

You may think to yourself, “my pet isn’t concerned about thunderstorms so fireworks won’t bother them either.” But unlike thunderstorms*, fireworks come out of nowhere for dogs. They can pick up on weather changes prior to thunderstorms, but with fireworks, there is no way to anticipate what’s to come.

So, what can you do to minimize your pet’s stress?
  • First, leave him at home. Unexpected fright can trigger a flight or fight reaction, causing a dog to bolt or slip out of their collar on the worst possible night. Leaving him at home ensures he is safe.
  • It is estimated that 25-50% of pets with microchips have outdated information linked to it. Make sure you know your pets microchip number and that all information on it is correct.
  • Consider walking your dog before dusk and then keeping music or a television on for white noise.
  • Choose an interior room without windows where outside noise is minimal for your pet.
  • A favorite treat or toy that evening can even help create a positive association with fireworks. Pro tip: Try freezing a Kong filled with peanut butter and treats to give them a long-lasting activity.
  • Many dogs are settled by “thundershirts” and calming wraps that help dogs feel secure. You can purchase these on Amazon.
  • Above all, stay calm yourself. It will impart a feeling of confidence for your pet.

Remember, Independence Day is about celebrating freedom and joy, and with a few thoughtful preparations, you can ensure that it’s a safe and enjoyable day for everyone in your family, including your four-legged friends. By taking these steps, you’ll help your pet navigate the holiday with ease, allowing you both to celebrate without worry. Happy Fourth of July!

Bella Super Hero

Bella, a cherished member of the animal shelter, longed for a forever family. She remained hopeful, her days filled with lounging on the couch and cuddling her prized possession: a blue dinosaur toy.

One day, while Bella was peacefully napping, a loud crash echoed through the shelter. Startled, she woke to find her blue dinosaur toy missing. Her keen senses picked up on a strange, glowing trail leading out of the room and through the door. Bella knew something was amiss.

Summoning her courage, Bella followed the glowing trail. As she stepped outside, she felt a surge of energy coursing through her body. Bella had developed a superpower: the ability to see and follow trails of energy left by objects and beings.

Determined to retrieve her beloved toy, Bella embarked on her quest. The glowing trail led her to the edge of the yard, where it suddenly veered into a dense forest behind the shelter. With her newfound abilities, Bella navigated the forest with ease. She could see every branch, every leaf, and every hidden path illuminated by the energy trail.

As Bella ventured deeper into the forest, she encountered a group of woodland animals. They were gathered around a mysterious portal, through which Bella could see a world filled with vibrant colors and floating toys.

One of the animals stepped forward. “Welcome, Bella, we have been waiting for you. Your blue dinosaur toy has been taken to the Land of Lost Toys, a realm where lost and forgotten toys are given new life. But fear not, for you have the power to bring it back.”

Bella’s heart swelled with determination. She knew she had to retrieve her toy, not just for herself, but for all the toys that had been lost and were waiting to be reunited with their owners.

The world beyond the portal was unlike anything Bella had ever seen. Toys of all shapes and sizes floated around. Bella’s superpower guided her through this whimsical land, where she found her blue dinosaur toy surrounded by other lost toys.

With as many toys in tow as possible, Bella sprinted back towards the portal. Just as the portal was about to close, Bella leaped through, landing safely back in the shelter’s yard.

The shelter staff rushed to her side, overjoyed to see her safe and sound. From that day on, Bella was known as the Guardian of Lost Toys. She continued to use her superpower to help reunite lost toys with their owners, bringing joy and comfort to countless families. And every evening, as she lounged on the couch with her blue dinosaur toy, Bella knew that she had found her true calling.

Bella, the calm and mellow couch potato, had become a true hero, proving that even the most unassuming among us can have the heart of a superhero. And she knew that one day, her perfect family would come.
