During storms like these, coastal shelters typically see a large increase in lost or displaced animals, and it’s essential that they clear as much space as possible for animals before the storm hits. So our Disaster Response Team drove through the night to Mississippi and back to bring 20 dogs to safety in Atlanta.

Tan dog being petted

One of these dogs was Millie. She was frightened and anxious from the long journey, but our staff worked patiently with her offering yummy treats and loving pets to earn her trust. Millie’s soft brown eyes looked up and told us everything we needed to know- she finally felt safe and loved.

Once she settled into our care, Millie was diagnosed with advanced heartworm disease, which would be fatal if left untreated. Our Shelter Medicine Team started Millie on a dose of antibiotics to prepare her body for the treatment that will help her be healthy once again.
