Our Animal Protection Unit received a call from our friends at Toccoa Stephens Humane Society after animal control officers found dozens of dogs living in neglectful conditions. Having been exposed to the elements in two sheds and a trailer, the dogs were swiftly removed from the property.

Our team packed up and left before sunrise to drive to Toccoa and bring 29 dogs to Atlanta. Here, they have been receiving medical care, enrichment and training, and all the love they need to thrive. Your donation helps to make that possible.

The dogs are quietly settling into their kennels. Most of them have urine-stained fur and many have scars on their faces from fighting for food. They’ve never had their own space before, let alone comfy beds and toys to play with.

We gave them warm, comforting baths. For many, this was the first bath of their life.

And now, thanks to your support, these incredibly resilient dogs are beginning to blossom and get the second chance at love that they deserve.

Your support is urgently needed to help us rescue more animals in need just like these 29 dogs. Please give generously today.

Dear Friends,
Baldwin was found wandering the busy streets without a single hair on his body. He was desperately hungry, severely underweight, and suffering from a serious case of pneumonia.
Thanks to donors like you, Baldwin was placed in a loving foster home, given special baths for the itchy mange that was causing his hair loss, and provided medication for his pneumonia.
It took several months of specialized care in a loving Atlanta Humane foster home, but Baldwin finally started to feel better…and his skin began to heal. He gained the weight he needed to run and play like a normal puppy. Soon, he stole the hearts of his new mom and dad (and two feline siblings!).
We are able to rescue Baldwin and other animals like him only because of your generous support. You have saved countless animals who were on the brink of death, helped them heal, and found them safe, happy homes. But there is still more work to be done…
Donate Now
It takes a lot to rescue animals like Baldwin and bring them from near death to new life — providing expert veterinary care, behavioral training, proper nourishment, and of course — lots of love and attention.
But their future rests in your hands. Please, donate today to support these animals in the new year.

We’re looking back on this difficult year and feeling so incredibly thankful for you.

Your support has ensured that we’ve been there for our community throughout a pandemic, and your support has changed so many lives. Please, take a moment to read about just some of the lives you’ve touched this year, and know that today, they’re thankful for you too.

We can’t thank you enough for being there for Atlanta’s animals, and being alongside us as we advocate for them.

Thank you.

‘Tis the season for friends, family, and holiday feasts—but also for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on undercooked turkey or an unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.

Watch out for those tempting nibbles!
Chocolate, raisins, garlic, onions or onion powder, sage, yeast dough, potato, and tomato leaves and stems, and alcohol are all plentiful this holiday season, and all are toxic to our pets. Be sure to keep your pet out of the kitchen and away from any toxic foods, and any hot ovens their curious noses might try to peek into this Thanksgiving.

But those sweet, begging eyes
It’s hard when your pets look at you with their sweet eyes, begging for a taste of the delicious Thanksgiving meal you’ve just cooked. A small taste of mashed potatoes or pumpkin pie shouldn’t cause an issue, but just don’t leave your pets wishing they had a pair of sweatpants to put on after dinner too. Any more than the tiniest taste is too much for your pet and can cause an upset stomach. And, if you can’t resist and give your pet a tiny nibble of turkey, be sure it’s well-cooked and boneless.

Want to provide your pet their own Thanksgiving dinner?
Fill a Kong with some watered-down chicken broth, some unseasoned sweet potatoes, and a dab of pumpkin. Then pop it in the freezer the night before. They’ll be occupied, and feel pretty lucky, while you’re sat around the table enjoying your feast, feeling pretty lucky for having them.

Better in Pairs

Life is better with a friend, and felines are better in pairs.

For a limited time, adopt one kitten and adopt them a kitten friend for $0. Or, adopt an already bonded pair of felines and just pay one adoption fee.

Kittens are tiny feline creatures with a massive amount of energy and curiosity clocking in under the age of 8 months. Bonded pairs are pre-determined by the Atlanta Humane Society based on the cat’s previous living situations.

Felines must be adopted together on the same day to qualify for the adoption discount, and the adoption fee that is the higher price of the two will be the fee that is charged at the time of adoption.

The Atlanta Humane Society takes full responsibility for the amount of cuteness and lifetime of love supplied by adopting two felines together

You’ve worked hard, saved diligently and are ready to enjoy your retirement years. Maybe you’re also looking for a way to give back to the organizations and causes that have been important to you. Consider making a gift from your IRA.

If you’re 70½ or older, you can use the IRA charitable rollover to make a tax-free gift to the Atlanta Humane Society. This law allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 directly to a qualified charitable organization without paying income tax on the distribution.

When you use the IRA charitable rollover to make a gift to the Atlanta Humane Society:

  • Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference you’re making.
  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer doesn’t generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions.
  • If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

Not 70½ Yet?

You can still support our mission with your IRA. Simply name the Atlanta Humane Society as a beneficiary of your account, and we’ll receive the funds, or the portion you designate, after your lifetime.

Somehow, at only 8 months old, little Wilson found himself limping down the street all alone, looking for a scrap of food to eat or a kind soul to help him. Someone caught a glimpse of this sad puppy and called the local animal control agency who arrived swiftly to pick him up.

When they realized the extent of his injuries, our friends at Fulton County Animal Services reached out and asked for our help caring for Wilson. His limp was pronounced, and his muscles were beginning to atrophy from a lack of using the leg.

Our Shelter Medicine Team went right to work evaluating Wilson’s condition, and x-rays revealed a severe break in his front left leg that needed immediate attention.

After a successful surgery, Wilson is now recovering with the help of his loving forever family.

I’m writing this today on behalf of Bianca and other animals who need rescuing right now. Too often, the animals who come to us at the Atlanta Humane Society have experienced unspeakable acts of neglect and abuse. Others have been abandoned by careless owners. In some cases, animals are found injured. No matter what the circumstances, we believe, like you do, that all these animals deserve to be rescued and given a second chance to live a happy life… like Bianca.

When Bianca first came to Atlanta Humane, she needed urgent medical care. Limping on her front leg, the gentle dog was clearly suffering. And once our veterinarians examined her, they could see why. Some time ago, Bianca had endured a terrible injury. And someone had neglected to treat it. At just one year old, Bianca had been living with terrible pain for months of her young life. Was it an accident? Was it abuse? We’ll never know. But we do know this: no animal should have to live like this.

After surgery to amputate one of her legs — her only chance for a pain-free life — Bianca finally began to heal. It is only through the compassion and generosity of neighbors like you that we can improve the lives of other animals like Bianca, as well as save those who are neglected and abused.

Our 2020 Fall Fund Drive is underway, and we need your help. We must raise $39,000 by October 31 to continue all our efforts to rescue animals from cruelty and neglect, and improve the lives of all animals through care and education.

Make a Gift Today!

Our staff and volunteers worked hard to save Bianca, and I’m happy to report she recovered in a caring foster home where the family fell in love with the sweet pup and adopted Bianca into their family forever.

Please give another suffering animal like Bianca hope with a generous gift.

Remember, you must make your donation to our 2020 Fall Fund Drive deadline by October 31! Thank you in advance for putting your love of animals into action.

With gratitude,
Cal Morgan
President and CEO

P.S. Please know that every gift counts! As a no-kill organization, the Atlanta Humane Society cares for animals as long as it takes to find their forever family. It’s a lot of work, and it can be taxing on our resources, but the animals entrusted into our care deserve it.

Danny

Danny’s story is shocking. Fortunately, it has a happy ending. But what’s most disturbing about these cases of animal abuse and neglect is how common they are. Together, let’s change that.

We were contacted about this sweet shepherd mix pup who was brought into a rural animal control facility with a collar embedded deeply and painfully into his neck.

Likely, it had been put on when he was smaller, and because the puppy was neglected and left outside to fend for himself, was never taken off as he grew. Danny needed urgent medical attention.

This is why you are so important. For defenseless animals like Danny, your compassionate gift helps:

  • Stop neglect and abuse
  • Heal abused dogs and cats
  • Provide care and shelter
  • Find adoptive families
  • Provide spay and neuter services
  • And much more!

Luckily, because of friends like you, we got to Danny just in time.

We welcomed Danny with open arms, and as soon as he arrived at the shelter, we rushed him straight into surgery to clip the strangling collar, gently clean his wound, and start him on antibiotics for the infection.

Danny was free. Free from the heavy chain around his neck, free from neglect, and free to find love. As soon as his neck and heart had healed enough, sweet Danny went home with his new loving family, wagging all the way.

My friend, your continued support is needed now more than ever. As a no-kill organization, AHS cares for animals as long as it takes to find their forever family. It’s a lot of work, and it can be taxing on our resources, but the animals entrusted into our care deserve it.

And, with the difficult challenges that COVID-19 has brought, our work is even more critical, as we give additional assistance to struggling pet owners. In this time of hardship, your donation enables us to provide the resources that keep pets with the families who love them.

Please walk alongside us. Today, your urgent, tax-deductible gift has the power to change a life forever. Just ask Danny.

Warmest Regards,

Cal Morgan

Bandit and Banjo have wobbled their way into our hearts. These adorable 2-month-old puppies have a permanent case of the wiggles caused by condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, which is a neurological condition that causes them to wobble with each step they take. This condition can vary in severity, but both Bandit and Banjo have fairly severe cases that will affect them for the rest of their lives.

Puppy on Intake Table

While they will need special adopters who understand their unique needs, both Banjo and Bandit are sweet puppies who love playing with toys, snuggling, and getting into a little bit of trouble.

Brown puppy playing with red ball

Puppies with special needs like these require extra medical care, specialized foster homes, and will likely take longer to find the perfect forever home. Your support is needed to provide the love and care these puppies need while they wait to be adopted.
