Yesterday, we asked for your help in supporting 45 dogs that were being rescued from neglectful conditions in south Georgia.

We weren’t yet sure of what medical conditions the dogs were facing, but our team has completed their evaluations – and these dogs – like Krissy – desperately need your help. And your donation will be doubled when you give now.

Krissy is a 3-year-old shepherd mix suffering from neurological issues that make her unable to walk. While our team is running tests on the potential cause, it’s clear that Krissy has been struggling for a while. She has sores all over her legs from laying on the filthy ground and falling repeatedly while trying to access food and water.

And now, we need your help to carry the weight of her suffering.

Can you help us carry Krissy into a better life?

URGENT: Moments ago we received a call about a 10-day-old kitten who was being tossed into the air and dropped repeatedly by some children. An Animal Control Officer intervened and brought the kitten to the Atlanta Humane Society for urgent medical care. Penny is in critical condition.

Your donation right now will be matched to support her during these next 24 critical hours.

We’ve named her Penny, and right now she could use all the lucky pennies in the world to survive the abuse she endured. She is struggling to hold her head up, so our Shelter Medicine Team put her in a tiny neck brace. We also fear she might have swelling in her brain, so we placed her in an oxygen box to get her tiny body what it needs.

She desperately needs your support right now, and your donation will be matched when you give in the next 24 hours, before Friday at midnight. She’ll need to be monitored every moment overnight to ensure she is still breathing and comfortable.

Will you help care for tiny Penny?

On Thursday, January 3, the Atlanta Humane Society’s Animal Protection Unit responded to a neglect case involving approximately 165 German Shepherd Dogs on a property in Metter, GA. After carefully assessing the scene alongside the Candler County Sheriff’s Department, over 150 dogs ranging in age and health status were found living in extremely neglectful conditions.

The owner of the property was arrested is facing animal cruelty charges. The Atlanta Humane Society team is back on site today and will be moving the most medically in-need animals back to our Alpharetta and West Midtown locations later today.

The dogs on this property were living in extremely unsanitary conditions and are were desperate need of help. Our team is working closely with Candler County Sheriff’s Department to provide the support and care needed to ensure the best outcome for these dogs.

All of the animals will be assessed and given a basic medical exam on-site, and we are working tirelessly to find safe and appropriate placement for all of the dogs.

We can notify you the next time a we have a German Shepherd that is available for adoption. Visit our Pet Alert page.

Your support makes make tails wag and so much more. Please donate today.

Just look at that smile! Riley is a very happy five-year-old American Pitbull Terrier who is so ready for love and can’t wait to find a family who will give it to him.

Described as a “champion cuddler,” Riley loves relaxing at home and showing affection to every person he meets. He’ll do well with visitors to your home and won’t mess with any of your furniture or possessions; he’s too interested in his soft squeaky toys for that!

An ideal home for Riley would be one without cats. He’s friendly with dogs but doesn’t show much interest in playing with them. He also doesn’t have any known history with children, but we’re happy to help facilitate a meet-and-greet with your whole family.

Riley qualifies for our Foster First Program, which means that you can foster him for 14 days prior to adopting to ensure that you’re a perfect match for one another.

Last month, we introduced you to Penny, a 10-day-old kitten who was being tossed into the air and dropped repeatedly by some children. An Animal Control Officer intervened and brought her to the Atlanta Humane Society for urgent medical care.

When she arrived, Penny was in critical condition. But today, we’re so happy to share a positive update on her status!

Your donation will help care for the animals like Penny who come through our doors each day.

Sometimes life brings unexpected hardships that catch you off guard, and that’s exactly what happened to Luna’s previous owner. By the time she was brought to see a veterinarian, Luna’s skin was calloused and itchy. She was immensely uncomfortable and was unable to stop scratching and shaking her head for temporary relief.

Faced with mounting vet bills and personal challenges that made providing proper care for Luna impossible, Luna’s owner’s voice shook as she asked the veterinarian about euthanasia. The caring veterinarian knew that Luna had a lot of life left to live and compassionately connected her to our team at the Atlanta Humane Society for help.

We immediately scheduled an appointment for this beautiful German Shepherd mix to come to the Atlanta Humane Society. Here she’ll be safe and loved as our Shelter Medicine Team works to bring her back to good health.

We quickly learned that Luna is extremely smart. She knows multiple commands, is eager to please, and we can’t wait to see her personality shine once she feels better.

In addition to her severe skin infection, diagnostics revealed that Luna also has other underlying medical conditions. It is also possible that these issues are contributing to her skin issues. We placed Luna in a loving foster home where she will get the care and comfort she needs. There, she’ll receive soothing medicated baths, topical treatments, and prescription medication to correct her thyroid issues.

Luna’s skin infection is so severe that her skin resembles the thick, hairless skin on an elephant. But thanks to your support, she’s receiving the top quality medical care she needs and the second chance she deserves.

Give now, and your gift will be put straight to work helping us rescue animals like Luna.

While you’re practicing social distancing and spending more time at home with your pet, what better way to enjoy time together than by making them a special treat? As the weather continues to warm up, this Apple PeaMutt Butter recipe from our friends at Taj Ma-Hound is sure to make your dog’s tail wag!

Apple PeaMutt Butter

  • 1/2  jar of applesauce or 8 oz
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 2 cups yogurt
  • 1/2 cup molasses or honey (optional)
Applesauce, peanut butter, banana, and yogurt on a kitchen counter

Blend the first three ingredients in a blender until smooth. If you don’t have a blender, mixing with a fork will work just fine! Add molasses and gently stir so that it looks like a chocolate swirl.

Honey being poured into a blender

Pour into individual serving vessels such as a plastic souflè cup, cupcake cup, or small paper cup. Freeze until solid.

Doggie Ice cream being poured into individual containers

You can take any combination of the below-suggested ingredients and mix or blend them together. For a non-dairy version, omit the yogurt and use any of the other ingredients (except peanut butter) as a base.

  • Pumpkin (plain canned)
  • Applesauce (unsweetened is best but sweetened is fine too)
  • Molasses or honey
  • Yogurt (plain, vanilla, or Greek yogurt will do – make sure your yogurt is not sugar-free).
  • Peanut Butter (because dogs want peanut butter in everything!)
  • Sweet Potatoes/Yams (cooked or canned – not raw)
  • Bananas

Enjoy!

This litter of six puppies had been thoughtlessly left in a car on a hot summer day. They were left there for hours before a good Samaritan found them and called their local Animal Control Department.

By the time they were rescued, several of the puppies were unconscious from heat exhaustion, and no one was sure that they would make it.

They were panting, dehydrated, and in desperate need of emergency care. Miraculously, every puppy from the litter survived this horrible situation, and they were transferred to the Atlanta Humane Society for continued care and adoption.

Now, these puppies are all living in happy, forever homes thanks to the kindness of a stranger. Let this serve as an important reminder… never, ever leave your pet in you car! Cracked windows are simply insufficient to provide adequate air flow, so when in doubt, leave your pets at home where it’s cool and you can save a life!

For more information about hot weather and pets, visit https://atlantahumane.org/summer-heat/. To help with the care of these six puppies and many others that will come through our doors, please make a donation or contribute an item from our wish list. Thank you!

Black Labrador Retriever being petted in outdoor setting with white text overlay reading

Kobe is a sweetheart who is looking for a home to call his own, but it’s taking a little longer than we expected. Still, we know his future family is out there!

Kobe is a four-year-old Labrador Retriever mix who absolutely loves people and will be a loyal partner for life. He enjoys being petted, so he’ll follow you around in hopes that you can give him the attention he craves. In return, Kobe is extremely affectionate and will stay by your side through thick and thin. And if you take him home with you, he’ll even join you on the couch (if you let him!) for movie night.

Kobe’s perfect home is one without dogs and small children. He is dog reactive and lacks basic manners, so he can be jumpy, mouthy, and strong on a leash. For these reasons, we’re looking for a family that can provide consistency and training while keeping him separated from other dogs. He is very much a puppy in an adult dog’s body.

Additionally, Kobe is being treated for heartworms, but don’t fret! It just means that he needs to stay calm and put his favorite game of fetch on hold for the time being. The Atlanta Humane Society is covering the cost of his treatment and once complete, all activity restrictions will be gone and you’ll be able to go on fun adventures with your new, loyal buddy.

Learn More About Kobe

If you have any questions about Kobe or want to meet him, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our adoptions staff by emailing [email protected]. We’d love to tell you more about this wonderful dog or help match you with another great dog who is looking for a home!
