Lottie hero

Lottie needs a foster or forever home, and she’s been waiting since April.

She came to us after sadly being found pregnant and tied to a tree. Her pups moved on long ago, but she’s still here, hoping for a calm place to land. She’s sweet, wiggly, house-trained, treat-motivated, and loves walks and snuggles.

Fostering Lottie means no cost, no pressure, just giving her a break from the shelter and a little love while she waits for forever. You take care of her, we’ll take care of the rest.

Biskit’s family has faced unimaginable loss in a short time. After the passing of a spouse and the uncertainty of housing insecurity, their days were filled with grief and instability. Through it all, Biskit remained a source of comfort, especially for their daughter who leaned on him during their hardest moments.

When they reached out to us, their biggest worry was how to keep Biskit safe while they worked toward stability. With most facilities that serve families experiencing homelessness unable to accept pets, they were faced with an impossible choice.

Through our Pets in Crisis Support Program, Biskit was placed in safe and loving foster care while his family focused on rebuilding their lives. Knowing that he was cared for gave them the peace of mind they needed to take the next steps forward.

Today, Biskit is right where he belongs — back home with his family. They are now in stable housing, reunited, and moving forward together.

Mamacita was adopted four years ago, and since then she had been a cherished member of her family.

But when her owner faced a personal crisis, they were confronted with the heartbreaking reality of being separated from her. When her owner reached out, they shared, “I am definitely coming back to get my dog. It’s tearing me apart to have to leave her, but I have to get help.”

At the Atlanta Humane Society, our support for animals doesn’t end at adoption. We remain a resource for pets and the people who love them, helping families through life’s most difficult moments.

Through our Pets in Crisis Support Program, Mamacita was welcomed into a safe and loving foster home while her owner worked to rebuild stability. That stability allowed them to bring Mamacita home again. After weeks apart, she was reunited with her family and returned to the comfort, love, and companionship she had always known.

Stix has been thriving in his current foster home. He has truly blossomed into the fun, affectionate pup we always knew he could be. His current foster family absolutely adores him, but they’ll be traveling for two months and are hoping someone can step in to care for him until they can welcome him back with open arms.

He’s a fetch pro with a winning smile, loves to cuddle, and is happiest as the center of attention. Stix would thrive as the only pet in the home and is ready to brighten someone’s life with his loyalty and affection — whether short-term or forever.

Fostering makes a lifesaving difference, and Stix cannot wait to share his love and his fetch skills with you. Giving Stix a temporary home will help him continue the wonderful progress he has made.

If you’re looking for a walking partner who’s equal parts playful, quirky, and affectionate, Hazel might just be the perfect match. This sweet pup has made daily walks her favorite routine, and she doesn’t mess around. With her foster mom, Hazel clocks in around 10,000 steps a day, and she’s always eager for the next adventure.

On her walks, Hazel takes the time to enjoy the little things. She sniffs every corner, greets new people with her trademark friendliness, and turns even the simplest outing into an adventure. She’s not in a hurry,  she just wants to explore, connect, and share the journey with you.

But Hazel isn’t all about the outdoors. At home, she’s a tug-of-war champion with a love for toys and a playful growl that’s all part of her charm. And when she’s ready to settle in, Hazel’s snuggly side shines through, making her just as happy to curl up with you as she is to explore the neighborhood.

Oh, and don’t forget her signature snort! The adorable quirk that’s earned her the nickname “Piglet.” It’s just another piece of her one-of-a-kind personality that makes Hazel impossible not to love.

Buck Blog Header

Buck is a big-hearted, goofy pup who’s equal parts silly playmate and loyal friend. He is searching for a home where he can put his energy, smarts, and love for adventure to good use. If you’re someone who enjoys an active lifestyle, here are three reasons why Buck could be the perfect fit for you:

1. He’s always up for an adventure.

Buck recently went on a Dog Day Adventure and showed just how much he loves the outdoors. Whether it’s a long walk, a hike, or exploring new places, Buck is happiest when he’s moving and discovering the world with his human by his side.

2. He’s smart and eager to learn.

Already trained on “sit,” “come,” “wait,” and even “kneel,” Buck has a strong foundation and loves working with people. With his playful spirit and sharp mind, he’d thrive in agility, advanced training, or just learning fun new tricks at home.

3. He balances playtime with snuggles.

After the running, jumping, and exploring, Buck is more than happy to curl up for belly rubs or a cuddle session. He’s the kind of dog who can keep up with you during the day, then settle in as your best snuggle buddy at night.

Buck would do best in a home with a fenced yard or with an adopter who can give him plenty of exercise. He’s dog-friendly, though his play style is energetic and best matched with pups who enjoy the same pace.

If you’re looking for a pet who brings joy, energy, and love into every moment, Buck might just be your perfect match.

If you’ve ever noticed your pet perking up at the sound of music, or even dozing off to a gentle melody, you’re not imagining it. Just like humans, animals can respond to music in powerful ways. The right sounds can ease stress, encourage relaxation, and even provide comfort during times of change or anxiety.

Why Music Helps Pets

– Eases Anxiety: Pets who struggle with separation anxiety, fear of thunderstorms, or new environments may benefit from soft, repetitive melodies that provide a sense of calm.
– Helps Hyper Pets Wind Down: If your dog or cat tends to bounce off the walls, playing soothing tracks can help set a peaceful mood in the home.
– Supports Calm Companions: Even naturally relaxed pets enjoy the comfort of quiet music. It can enhance nap time and make shared downtime even cozier.
– Masks Stressful Noises: Music can help drown out disruptive sounds like fireworks, traffic, or loud neighbors, creating a more secure environment.

Choosing the Right Music

Research suggests that pets respond best to genres like classical, ambient, and acoustic. Look for tracks that are steady and slow, with minimal percussion or jarring shifts. Vocals are okay, as long as the overall effect is gentle.

Our Playlist: Soothing Sounds for Pets

To make things easy, we’ve built a ready-to-play Spotify playlist filled with songs designed to help your furry friend (and you!) feel calm and content. It’s a calming mix of classical, ambient, and acoustic tracks chosen to soothe anxious pets and create a peaceful atmosphere at home. Perfect for nap time, winding down after play, or easing stress for both pets and their people.

This is a guest post, written by Cat Topia.

When we think about caring for our cats, food, water, and veterinary checkups often come to mind. But there’s another crucial element that is just as important: enrichment. Providing mental and physical stimulation isn’t a bonus or an afterthought, it’s a fundamental part of feline well-being. Without it, even the most loved cat can struggle with stress, poor health, and behaviors that leave owners feeling frustrated.

We’ll explore why enrichment is more than just “playtime,” the serious dangers that come with not meeting a cat’s needs, and why we strongly advocate for keeping cats indoors where they are safest. You’ll also discover simple, practical ways to make life more engaging for your cat, from vertical climbing spaces to interactive toys and, of course, the unique benefits of a catio.

At its core, enrichment is about honoring who cats are: curious, intelligent, and active beings who thrive when their environment supports both their bodies and their minds. By the end of this guide, you’ll see enrichment not as an extra step, but as an essential form of love and care that every indoor cat deserves.

Picture #1

Why Cat Enrichment Matters

Cats may live indoors, but their instincts as hunters, climbers, and explorers never disappear. Without opportunities to express these natural behaviors, they can become stressed, bored, or even develop health and behavior problems. Many people believe cats are “low-maintenance” pets who don’t need much interaction, but in reality, enrichment is just as essential to their well-being as proper nutrition and veterinary care. By finding ways to “capture the wild inside the home,” we help our cats live healthier, happier lives.

– Encouraging natural behaviors like scratching, climbing, and stalking.
– Reducing stress, boredom, and destructive habits.
– Supporting physical health through movement and exercise.
– Strengthening the bond between cats and their humans.

Picture #2

The Dangers of Lack of Enrichment

When cats don’t get the stimulation they need, it affects every part of their well-being. Boredom and frustration can quickly turn into stress, physical health problems, and behavior issues that often get mistaken for a “bad cat.” In reality, these are signs of unmet needs.

Without enrichment, cats may experience:

– Mental health struggles: stress, anxiety, depression, boredom (often shown through oversleeping, overgrooming, or destructive scratching).
– Physical health risks: obesity, diabetes, joint problems, and weakened muscles from inactivity.
– Behavioral issues: aggression, excessive vocalization, or litter box problems caused by frustration.

The Indoor-Only Cat Philosophy

While it may seem natural to let cats roam outdoors, the truth is that outdoor life poses serious risks. Cars, predators, toxins, and exposure to diseases like FIV and FeLV drastically shorten a cat’s lifespan. Studies show that indoor cats often live two to three times longer than their outdoor counterparts, simply because they are protected from these dangers. Beyond the risks to cats themselves, free-roaming felines also pose a major threat to wildlife, particularly birds and small mammals, contributing to ecological imbalances.

The good news is that cats don’t need to go outside to live fulfilling lives. With proper enrichment, indoor cats can enjoy safety, stimulation, and happiness all at once. By providing opportunities to climb, explore, and play, owners can offer their cats the best of both worlds, a long, healthy life that nurtures their natural instincts without exposing them to unnecessary dangers.

Simple and Effective Ways to Add Enrichment

Keeping cats indoors is the safest choice, but their environment needs to work harder to keep them engaged. Here are some simple, effective ways to enrich your cat’s life:

– Vertical spaces: Cat trees, wall shelves, and window perches give cats chances to climb and observe from above. Height satisfies their instinct to stay alert and secure, while also building confidence and providing exercise.
– Interactive play sessions: Daily play that mimics hunting keeps cats active and mentally sharp. Try wand toys, feather teasers, puzzle feeders, always ending with a toy or treat so your cat can “catch” its prey.
– Sensory stimulation: Cat-safe plants like cat grass or catnip offer a natural outlet. Provide different textures for scratching, and place a bird feeder outside a window to create “cat TV” that entertains without risk.
– Companionship and variety: A second cat (in the right household) can provide social interaction. For single-cat homes, rotating toys and rearranging climbing spaces keeps the environment fresh and exciting.
– Catios: One of the best forms of enrichment, a catio allows cats to enjoy the outdoors safely. From small window boxes to custom catios, these enclosures provide fresh air, sunshine, and natural stimulation without the dangers of roaming.

Practical Tips for Owners

Adding enrichment doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. Small, thoughtful changes can make a big difference in your cat’s daily life. The key is to start simple, observe what your cat enjoys, and make enrichment a consistent part of their routine. With the right approach, even busy cat parents can create a stimulating and happy environment.

Practical tips include:

– Start small: Just 5–10 minutes of daily play can improve your cat’s mood and health. Gradual changes are easier to maintain and less stressful for your pet.
– Observe and personalize: Every cat has unique preferences. Watch your cat to see if they are more of a climber, a hunter, or a lounger, then tailor enrichment to their personality.
– Be consistent: Enrichment should become part of the daily routine, just like feeding or cleaning the litter box. Preventing stress is always easier than fixing problem behaviors later.
– Budget-friendly enrichment: Cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, and paper bags can all become exciting toys. Even rotating furniture or hiding treats can make the environment feel new and stimulating.

Enrichment as Everyday Cat Care

Enrichment is not a luxury, it’s a cornerstone of responsible cat care. Just like nutrition and veterinary visits, providing stimulation is essential to a cat’s physical health, mental balance, and overall happiness. Cats who are given opportunities to climb, play, and explore not only live longer and healthier lives, but they also share deeper, more positive bonds with their humans.

The beauty of enrichment is that it doesn’t have to be complicated. A few minutes of play, a new climbing perch, or even a simple cardboard box can bring joy and vitality to your cat’s day. For those looking to take enrichment even further, catios offer one of the best ways to combine safety with stimulation, allowing cats to enjoy the outdoors without risk.

As you think about your own cat’s needs, consider trying just one new enrichment activity this week, whether it’s a short daily play session, a DIY puzzle toy, or starting the process of exploring a catio for your home. Small changes add up, and over time, they can transform your cat’s quality of life. After all, a stimulated cat is a healthy, happy cat, and that’s the goal every pet parent can embrace.
