Our Animal Protection Unit just arrived with 33 beagle puppies who were born in a facility that breed animals for testing and was riddled with animal welfare concerns.

These beagles are just a few of the 4,000 who were born and raised at a mass-breeding Envigo facility in Virginia. Repeated federal inspections of this facility resulted in dozens of violations, including findings that some dogs had been “euthanized” without first receiving anesthesia, that dogs had received inadequate veterinary care and insufficient food, and that they were living in unsanitary conditions.

As we often do, our Animal Protection Unit has been working closely with our animal welfare partners on this transport. Our friends at Atlanta Beagle Rescue, Beagle Freedom Project, and Athens-Area Humane will split up caring and loving on these new arrivals with us.

Your donation right now will be doubled to ensure our Animal Protection Unit can continue to rescue animals in need, step up during emergencies, and be there when disaster strikes.

Meet Jacob Black, our champion snuggler! Snuggles are his superpower, and he’ll happily cuddle up with you to ease your troubles. Jacob Black wants to be your most loyal friend and will comfort you whenever you need it. He loves cuddling and will even roll over on his back for belly rubs!

When left alone, Jacob Black is a perfect gentleman. He’ll spend the day napping and won’t have any accidents in your home. He’s also very quiet,  so you won’t hear too many barks from him.

Jacob Black loves everyone—even the vet! He’s gotten along with other dogs, cats, and kids in the past, so if you’d like to see how he gets along with your family members, speak with an Adoption Counselor and they’ll help to facilitate a meet and greet. He also qualifies for our Foster First Program, so you can take him home for two weeks prior to adoption to see how he fits into your family. Jacob Black is currently living in a foster home and would love to meet you!

Visit Jacob Black’s bio to learn more, then fill out a pre-adoption application to meet him.

Atlanta Humane is moving to a new payment processor called Classy Pay on August 22. This comes with a few added benefits for you, including easier ways to make changes to your donation. You will also notice a change on your bank statement, and your incredible monthly gift will show up on this as ‘AtlantaHumane.Org.’

This change in payment processors shouldn’t have any effect on your monthly contribution. However, Classy did share that there’s a slight chance that some monthly donations may soft decline. This just means that your financial institution (i.e. your bank or credit card company) needs some time to warm up to the new payment processor. This is totally normal and, if this does occur, your donation should go through successfully in future months. Don’t worry, you won’t be double charged for a month that you miss due to a soft decline. If any issues with the processing of your donation arise, we will quickly reach out to you.

Once we switch over to the new processor, we’ll send you an email with login directions. With the new system, it will be much easier to log in and update all your donation information online!

Please feel free to reach out to Chelsea Ericson, Corporate Giving & Direct Response Coordinator, at 404-974-2899 if you have any questions. And, again, thank you for your support and ongoing care for animals in need.

When little Hemlock came into our care, she was distressed.

Two good Samaritans had found her at a gas station on a scorching hot summer day. At just 1.5 pounds, the tiny kitten was covered in fleas, dehydrated, and appeared to have a badly broken leg.

That’s when Atlanta Humane stepped in. Our Shelter Medicine Team immediately provided Hemlock with water, flea treatments, and pain medication to make her comfortable while they performed X-rays.

The X-rays showed a previous fracture that had caused her bone to break through the skin in addition to multiple newer fractures that prevented her from putting weight on her left rear leg.

It’s difficult to think about what would have happened if Hemlock hadn’t been found and brought into our care. As she continues to undergo treatment, we also recognize that none of her specialized care would be possible without our community’s support of our Shelter Medicine Team.

Hemlock’s story is, sadly, a common one. Hundreds of animals just like her come through our doors needing specialized, and sometimes intensive, medical treatment. And when they’re fragile kittens like Hemlock, it’s important for them to receive medical care right away.

Every animal deserves a lifesaving miracle, and we’ll keep you updated on Hemlock’s journey.

Summer is in full swing! For people, that means swimming pools, cookouts, and family vacations. But what about our pets?

Summer often means we’re home more with our pets, and the warm weather offers pets the opportunity to accompany their owners to the park, lake, and maybe even the cookout where they can sneak a tasty snack. However, despite all the fun that summer holds, the hot weather can be dangerous for our pets. Read below for 5 tips to help your pets stay safe this summer!

  1. Never ever leave your dog in a hot car. Even on a seemingly mild day, the inside of your car can soar past 100 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of minutes. Cracking the windows is simply not enough to provide adequate air flow, so when in doubt, leave your pooch at home where it’s cool.
  2. Take care of your pet’s paws! Before taking your dog for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Instead, try letting them do their business in a grassy or mulched area that won’t burn their sensitive paw pads.
  3. Watch out for pesky parasites! Fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites abound during the warm summer months, and your pet depends on you to provide preventatives to keep these critters at bay. Your pet should receive a yearly fecal exam to confirm that he or she is parasite-free, and a monthly heartworm and flea preventative will help ensure your pet stays healthy when parasites are at their worst.
  4. Know the signs of heat exhaustion. In the event that your dog begins to overheat, it is crucial that you recognize the signs and provide care quickly. Watch for panting, excessive drooling, reddened gums, dehydration, and a rapid heart rate. Ensure that your dog moves to a cool environment immediately, provide cool, clean water, and call your veterinarian.
  5. It’s always best to keep pets indoors but if your pet is spending time outside, be sure to provide cool, clean water and plenty of shade.

During the past few weeks, 51 beagles were transferred to us by the Humane Society of the United States after being relinquished from a facility that breeds animals for animal testing.

These dogs were living in confined, unsanitary spaces and when they arrived, we knew they’d need special medical help.

We reached out to our friends at VCA Animal Hospitals to help us ensure these dogs received the medical care they needed. After our Shelter Medicine Team evaluated each of them and provided them with a medical plan, VCA began helping to ensure each one of these beagles received a complete dental cleaning and extractions on any teeth causing them pain. The incredible efforts have been split between our friends at VCA Pets are People Too Roswell Animal Hospital and VCA Pets Are People Too Veterinary Hospital on Piedmont Road.

The VCA teams have been taking excellent care of these beagles and getting in some extra snuggles too.

The beagles are being made available for adoption as we complete their needed medical and behavioral care. To see all adoptable dogs or sign up for Pet Alerts, please visit our Adoptable Dogs page.
