Sammy can’t see.

When he was brought into our care after being found outside, his left eye was extremely swollen. Our Shelter Medicine Team discovered a deep corneal ulcer in the center of his eye.

Deep corneal ulcers are extremely painful and, if left untreated, can cause irreparable damage to the eye.

But little Sammy deserves to see clearly for the rest of his life, and you can help make that happen. Your gift—up to $25,000—will be triple matched thanks to a donor who is honoring their dog, George.

We see the worst of it.

One day, it’s a sweet puppy with a broken leg who was left in a plastic tub in a parking lot. The next, it’s a litter of orphaned neonate kittens who are much too young to fend for themselves.

At Atlanta Humane, animals often come to us broken and in fear.

But our Shelter Medicine works hard to provide them with the medical care they so desperately need.

You can help us heal broken animals. Your gift will be matched up to $25,000 when you give before Tuesday, November 29 at midnight, thanks to a donor who is honoring their dog, George.

Please, click to donate and then read more about the animals we’ve helped below.

Gumby was abandoned in a parking lot. Dumped thoughtlessly in a plastic tub, he was found terrified and whimpering in pain. We wrapped him up and told him it was going to be alright. He was finally safe. Your support enabled us to provide the immediate care that Gumby needed to heal.

Each year, hundreds of neonatal kittens are found orphaned and alone. These fragile little lives require near constant, specialized care to survive. Dedicated fosters bottle feed these kittens while the Shelter Medicine team carefully oversees their medical treatment and growth. Without our help, kittens like these wouldn’t make it.

Shelley was one of 32 dogs rescued from severe neglect. They were living in their own filth without any access to much-needed veterinary care. As soon as we saw Shelley, we knew she was in rough shape. Her tiny, frail body was matted from head to toe, and she could barely see from the thick mats hanging from her face. Her teeth were completely rotten, which made it exceedingly difficult for her to eat. She also had multiple mammary tumors. Our team carefully made sure that all of Shelley’s ailments were tended to and at 11 years old, sweet Shelley finally received the love and care that she deserved.

Three-month-old Asami tested positive for parvovirus. This disease is so deadly that shelters often euthanize at the first sign of it, but we know that the right resources can bring hope to dogs like Asami. Our Shelter Medicine Team provided him with around-the-clock treatment, including fluids and medications, while he was isolated from other animals. Asami was able to beat parvovirus because of support from people like you.

This happy boy is Leopold, and he’s looking for a forever home! With his infectious smile, nothing would make Leopold happier than to go home with you.

Leopold loves all people, and he’s not shy about asking for pets. He loves being with people and going along with whatever it is that they want to do. His nickname is “Snugglebug” because he’s so mellow and enjoys snuggling on the couch.

As a food-motivated dog, Leopold is very well-behaved. He’s very smart and trainable and is already crate-trained and potty-trained. He enjoys walks but can pull a bit, so it’d be great to find a family who can continue working with him on his leash manners.

If you’re interested in adopting Leopold, he qualifies for our Foster First Program. This means you can take him home for 2 weeks prior to adopting him to make sure he’s a perfect match for you.

Meet Lelu! As you can see, this gentle and easy-going girl has beautiful long, golden, and cream-colored fur. She was born to be adored!

If you’re patient with getting to know her, Lelu will turn into a cuddle bug who loves getting her head scratched. She typically sleeps all day while her foster mom works, and then cuddles up with her on the couch and in bed for pets.

Lelu is quiet and prefers her environment to be the same. Because of this, Lelu would do best as the only pet in the home. Lelu’s foster mom reports that she’s the first cat she’s ever fostered who hasn’t woken her up at 5 a.m. for food or playtime!

Lelu has a heart murmur and requires some extra care for her stiff joints, but our adoption counselors would be happy to talk with you more about that.

If you’re interested in adopting Lelu, she qualifies for our Foster First Program. This means that you can take her home for 2 weeks prior to adoption to make sure she’s a good fit in your home.

Say hello to Todd and Chief! These two boys are Bluetick Coonhound brothers who came to Atlanta Humane with spinal deformities and leg abnormalities that make them walk a bit differently from other dogs.

Todd and Chief instantly charmed the staff and volunteers at Atlanta Humane. With their sweet personalities and goofy movements, the two dogs quickly found foster homes to give them the one-on-one care that they required.

After being placed into foster homes, our team went to work. Specialists confirmed that the hounds’ condition couldn’t be fixed with medication or surgery, and they also assured us that the dogs were not in pain. With this knowledge, we formulated care plans to ensure that Todd and Chief had everything they needed to thrive. This included space to run around and strengthen their muscles along with physical therapy–both land and water–to help them grow stronger and learn how to use their legs better.

We’re thrilled to say that both of these loving boys found their forever homes.

Todd’s adopter has another dog and plenty of space for him to roam. He enjoys getting loved on by his new family and continues to go to water therapy on a weekly basis.

Chief went to home with 6 acres to run around on, 3 children, and another dog to play with. Two of the children have cerebral palsy, a disorder that affects a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture, and Chief is a big inspiration to them in overcoming their own physical challenges.

We are so thankful for our donors, fosters, and volunteers who help to make happy endings like these possible!

Meet Joey. When he first arrived at Atlanta Humane, he could barely walk. His hind legs slipped out from beneath him and, try as he might, he just couldn’t get his legs to support him.

Physically, Joey had begun to form wounds where his paws would drag over the ground behind him. Mentally, he was visibly depressed by his inability to get around.

Our Shelter Medicine Team knew he needed our help and immediately began working on a plan of care.

The first step was conducting a thorough exam to determine the cause of his issues. Using a sling, our veterinarians checked his spine, legs, and gait, and eventually diagnosed him with a spinal condition that is possibly worsened by his weight.

We began sending Joey to physical therapy at Georgia Veterinary Rehabilitation, where the team helps him through both land and water therapy to improve his mobility. He also does daily exercises and receives laser therapy and dry needling with electrical stimulation in support of our goal to help him walk better.

Joey has been fitted with a wheelchair that helps him get around more easily. Although he still needs one-on-one care to help with some basic life functions, the wheelchair has greatly improved his quality of life. He enjoys going on short walks and experiencing what it’s like to move around freely again!

Joey will continue receiving this exemplary care while he remains at Atlanta Humane, but we also know that his forever home is out there. This sweet boy is a staff and volunteer favorite in the shelter, and for good reason! Joey has good manners, is housebroken, enjoys meeting people, and is an affectionate cuddle bug. He wants to be the only pet in the home so he can keep all your love to himself.
