After tense negotiations (and a bribe of tuna treats), Dean has agreed to return control of the website. As a gesture of goodwill, he’s now accepting applications for his forever home.

Kitten season is here we want to help all of the mischievous felines and tiny troublemakers who will soon be flooding the shelter.

Well…. really… we just don’t like to share and want to make sure there is more than enough toys and treats to go around.

Because the hoomans are so desperate to get their site back, all gifts made towards our ransom demands will be 3X matched.

But we’re not completely unreasonable. So here are some other ways you can help the hoomans.

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Pamela Isdell, an extraordinary advocate for our mission.

“Because of Pamela Isdell’s visionary commitment to helping hurt, homeless, and at-risk animals, there are many mission-centric programs that have been lifted higher by her family’s philanthropy. We are truly grateful to have known her.”
– Cal Morgan, President and CEO, Atlanta Humane Society

Pamela Isdell

Pamela Isdell, husband Neville, and daughter Cara came to Atlanta in the 80’s following his international leadership career with Coca-Cola. Pamela quickly became engaged by chairing events and supporting programs through the Isdell Family Foundation.

One of the first projects supported was a rescue trailer used for staff to stay on-site for cruelty rescues or disaster response. The recognizable Isdell Family Foundation logo with the red African tree and sun on the side of the trailer was seen traveling miles of roads throughout Georgia and the Southeast helping save animal lives.

In 2010, Pamela graciously opened her home to host with Miss Daisy “Chair Dog” the No Ball Patron Party at her pool pavilion raising funds to support the shelter dogs and cats at the historic Howell Mill location.

When she first toured the Mansell Campus and met with Cal Morgan, President and CEO, she said she was concerned about the industry standard glass kennel doors because they wouldn’t allow the dogs to use their full senses. As kennel designs changed and improved, she was very happy to see the dog and cat kennels at our new Campus have grates at nose level to allow for sensory exploration.

Pamela and her family generously supported the Capital Campaign for the Arthur M. Blank Family Animal Center and have three named dog kennels providing comfort and care for larger adoptable dogs.

In 2022, we were pleased to recognize her longstanding support with the Anne Cox Chambers Humane Heroine award presented at Bow Wow Brunch.

At our Atlanta location, a sign was recently installed, naming our agility and behavior enrichment area Isdell Park. There are now many happy dogs who are able to receive increased exercise and stimulate all their senses.

Additionally, the Foundation has provided years of generous support for foster care, pet food distribution, shelter medicine, behavioral health, and extraordinary specialist veterinary care.

Isdell Park

In recent months while she was in South Africa, she continued to stay in touch, asking about particular dogs in social media posts throughout the community.

Pamela’s kindness and dedication to animal advocacy will be greatly missed.

We’re excited to announce that our new Marietta location will be home to a special partnership with Dogs for Better Lives!

Together, we’re bringing their From Shelter to Service Dog program to Marietta, which will give select Atlanta Humane dogs the opportunity to be trained as Service Dogs for people with disabilities.

Our new Marietta location offers a unique advantage to this program: a private and cozy on-site house.

This environment, combined with expert training and the support of dedicated foster volunteers, will allow these rescue dogs to have a second chance not just at finding a home, but at changing lives.

We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Dogs for Better Lives and give our shelter dogs an even greater purpose.

How It Works

Through this program, foster volunteers provide temporary homes for dogs while they undergo professional training during the day. In the evenings and on weekends, the dogs relax in a home environment, where fosters help reinforce their training.

Dogs that successfully complete the program are then matched with a client in need. As part of this process, foster volunteers will have the opportunity to virtually meet the dog’s new partner and hear firsthand how their future service dog will provide life-changing support.

Dogs for Better Lives

It’s a powerful reminder of how fostering not only transforms a rescue dog’s life but also creates independence and security for someone who needs it most.

When Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup arrived at Atlanta Humane, they were terrified. They had come from a heartbreaking situation where more than 30 dogs were left to fend for themselves in dangerous conditions. Many of them suffering from malnutrition, flea infestations, and even gunshot wounds.

Fearful and unsure of the world, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup needed more than just medical care. They needed time, patience, and the expertise of our Behavior Team to help them build trust and confidence.

Our Behavior Team developed individualized behavior plans for each dog, focusing on helping them feel safe and comfortable in their new environment. Already, they are showing signs of improvement.

Bubbles even took a huge step forward recently by participating in our Puppy Palooza event! Being in a new environment with people and activity was a big milestone for him, and it’s proof of the incredible progress he’s making.

Blossom and Buttercup are also making strides in their own ways. With each passing day, they are learning that humans can be a source of love and safety.

The journey isn’t over yet, but thanks to the dedication of our Behavior Team, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are on their way to brighter futures. We’ll continue to provide them with the support they need to gain confidence and, when they’re ready, find loving homes.

After experiencing multiple heartbreaking losses, one family was left with an impossible question: What would happen to their three beloved poodles?

Miko, Shogun, and Kotei had been cherished—receiving weekly baths, regular grooming, and even annual dental cleanings. But despite being well-loved and impeccably cared for, they suddenly had nowhere to go. Thankfully, we were able to provide exactly that.

We welcomed all three senior poodles into our care, ensuring they received the same level of love and attention they were used to. Soon, they will be on their way to a new home, where they can continue to live out their retirement years.

Stories like this are only possible because of the compassion and generosity of our community. Every donation, every act of support, and every kindhearted gesture helps give pets like these poodles a second chance.

Our Day of Giving was yesterday, but our match has been extended for a limited time thanks to Metlife Pet Insurance! That means your gift today will go twice as far to help rescue animals in need—just like January and her puppies.

January arrived at a county shelter, scared and unsure, with 11 tiny newborns depending on her. Thanks to supporters like you, we were able to bring her into our care, and now she’s raising her little family in the safety of a loving foster home.

But there are so many more animals in need of a second chance. And we can’t be there for them without your help.

Match Extended, January and Pups email

Every animal deserves a future filled with love and security. Your gift today will provide critical care, safe shelter, and hope for more animals like January and her puppies.

And with thanks to Metlife Pet Insurance, your gift today can help twice as many animals.

A year ago, Sally’s story was one of heartbreak.

Severely underweight and terrified, it was clear that she had suffered at the hands of those who were meant to care for her. Her previous owner was arrested, and Sally was left to recover. With the support of compassionate people like you, we were able to give Sally the care, medical attention, and love she needed to heal.

Sally1

Fast forward to today…

Sally recently found her forever home with a wonderful veteran who is beyond thrilled to welcome her into their family. This joyful ending is a testament to the dedication we put into every animal, no matter how long the journey takes.

Sally2

Tomorrow is our Day of Giving but you don’t have to wait. Your donation today can make more success stories like Sally’s possible.

When you give, your gift will be 2x matched—doubling your impact to help animals in need and continue the work of healing and second chances.

Please join us, and let’s give animals like Sally the happy ending they deserve.
