As we reach the hot summer months, it is important to remember to keep your pet healthy in the heat. Take a look below for tips to keep your pets cool during the summer heat!

Never leave in a parked car.

Don’t leave your pet in the car, even on mild days. Even with the windows cracked, the inside of the car can reach dangerous temperatures in minutes.

Provide water.

Pets can become dehydrated quickly, refill your pets water bowl with cool fresh water more often than usual on hot days.

Limit exercise during peak hot hours.

Take your pet on walks or exercise during the cooler hours like early morning or evening. Keep paws away from hot pavement.

Limit time outside.

If it is too hot outside for us, it is too hot outside for your pet. Don’t leave your pet outside for an extended period of time. When your pets are outside, provide them with plenty of shade.

Know the signs of heatstroke.

*Seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect your pet is undergoing heatstroke.

  • Excessive and prolonged panting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Dark red and/or tacky tongue/gums
  • Weakness and lethargy
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • High heart rate

Cupcake was brought to the Atlanta Humane Society along with her brother Romeo when their previous owner could no longer care for them.

Sadly, Romeo had severe heartworm disease and passed away due to heart failure soon after they arrived in our care. We held Cupcake tight and assured her that it would be okay.
After experiencing the heartbreaking loss of her brother, we found several tumors on Cupcake’s body- one on her head, one on her belly, and one on her back leg. Our Shelter Medicine Team worked to remove the tumors to provide Cupcake a better quality of life.
After surgery, we found Cupcake a loving foster home where both her heart and her body could heal. We made sure her foster home had another dog for Cupcake to bond with after the loss of her brother, and she began to thrive.
After a few weeks of recovery in her foster home, Cupcake was adopted. It didn’t take long for her to steal the hearts of her new forever family, and now her golden years will be filled with all the love that she deserves.

Your donation today will help us care for animals just like Cupcake.

Earlier this spring Albany, GA was hit by a devastating tornado. This tornado hit one of Albany Humane Society’s crucial foster homes, and it completely destroyed the house and the area designated for the foster dogs.

Luckily, all the animals living in this home were safely recused, sustaining only minor injuries. However, there was nowhere to house these survivors amidst the wreckage.  Albany Humane Society is one of our statewide program partners, so we immediately stepped in to offer our support.

The Atlanta Humane Society was able to order pop-up dog kennels and doghouses for Albany Humane Society to pick up the next day and set up at another foster’s home. This allowed the dogs to be looked after while the original foster rebuilds.

After Albany’s clear-the-shelter plea during COVID-19 saw many of the tornado dogs rescued, they were able to use the emptied kennels to rescue another 22 dogs. We were happy to lend a helping hand to Albany Humane Society and are grateful for all the work they are able to continue to do.

Now more than ever, we are thankful for our pets.

It seems like the world has been turned upside down. But our pets help get us through hard times. It is time to celebrate the amazing bond that we have with our pets and how much they bring light to each day we spend with them. Our pets are always there for us unconditionally, and we are grateful to have them in our lives.

Axl was thrown from a car. A good Samaritan who saw this horrible thing happen immediately pulled over and rescued the kitten. They contacted the Atlanta Humane Society for help.

Axl, held in arms

Axl needed a loving home to give him the proper care he needs to heal and grow. His rescuer generously offered to take Axl into their home.

We sent them home with one of our Grow-a-Kitten kits. These kits come with kitten food, litter, bottles, blankets, and other supplies to help kittens like Axl grow.

We are happy to supply these kits to support our community’s kittens during kitten season, and especially during the COIVD-19 pandemic. Along with the kits, we will also provide orphaned kittens who are part of our Grow-a-Kitten program with their first vaccines and spay or neuter them when they are big enough.

If you find yourself caring for an orphaned kitten, you can request a Grow-a-Kitten kit to help with their care.

Bella came into our care with a skin condition that was like nothing we had seen before. She was in pain and desperately needed our help. We placed her into a loving AHS foster home where she was given the nurturing love that she deserved.

Bella went through multiple diagnostics and treatments for her skin condition, but nothing seemed to help. We needed answers to help Bella and relieve her pain, so we took her to see a specialist where they performed a biopsy. From there Bella was diagnosed with ichtyosis, which is a rare and painful skin condition that prevents the top layer of skin from developing correctly.

She was prescribed special shampoo and topical treatments from the dermatologist, and her foster parents lovingly administered the daily treatments she needed.Bella is finally recovering and feeling better. She is thriving in her foster home and her happy go-lucky personality shines brighter each day.

Your donation will help care for Bella and animals just like her. Please donate today.

Once you can determine your kitten’s age, you can better develop a game plan!
