Our Vision for the Future
Over the past 7 years, we have tackled significant challenges facing homeless animals across Georgia, supported our most vulnerable pet owners during the pandemic, and grown our support of other animal welfare organizations. As the efforts of adoption, spay and neuter, and transport have helped our organization and the animal welfare community reduce overpopulation, we are faced with an exciting and challenging question: How do we continue to reduce overpopulation and serve the newly exposed and more complex problems of under-resourced pets and their caregivers, a lack of accessible and affordable veterinary care, and slowly moving systems of change within the animal welfare field?
As we move forward as a leader in the field of caring for animals, we are committed to evolving the way we serve our community, both here in Atlanta and across the Southeast. At the beginning and end of each day, we are driven to make a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. We will build on our long history of attentive and compassionate service to ensure more pets can get access to the resources they need.
Our goal is clear and deeply motivated by our desire to keep pets in their loving homes: We seek to improve the lives and well-being of pets and people, collectively and perhaps most importantly, one life, one need, one animal at a time.

- Keep More Pets in Loving Homes
Atlanta Humane recognizes that true community impact requires a comprehensive approach to caring for both pets and people. Our strategy is a combination of solutions-oriented for unhoused pets as well as proactive initiatives that keep pets from ever having to enter a shelter. Most people who own pets love them and want to keep them as part of their family. Often, a crisis or lack of resources causes people to surrender their pets. The sustainable, long-term solution to overcrowded animal shelters is helping pet owners through their crisis moment and/or providing access to the resources they need to care for their pets. In doing so, we keep families together and ensure fewer animals are living in shelters. For animals that do require shelter and a second chance, Atlanta Humane remains committed to providing that care and helping those animals find loving homes.
- Make Veterinary Care Accessible and Affordable
Atlanta Humane recognizes the lack of access to affordable veterinary care as the largest current animal welfare crisis with approximately 30% of all pets never seeing a veterinarian. Atlanta Humane wants to scale Remedy, our low-cost, compassionate veterinary care practice, to help more animals. We are advancing accessibility and the scope of impacted communities via a three-pronged approach: brick-and-mortar facilities, in-home and/or mobile veterinary options, and community care events.
- Improve the Health and Wellbeing of All Animals
To honor its vision, Atlanta Humane aspires to increase its impact on the needs of pets and people across the Southeast. In that aspiration, Atlanta Humane acknowledges that it must build the strongest programs, organizations, and/or businesses to serve the needs in the smartest, most cost-effective ways. Atlanta Humane seeks to expand its Remedy work within and outside of Atlanta, create a unique and scalable shelter support framework, continue its strategic transport of animals from partner shelters, and create a regional strategy to address animal cruelty.
- Maintain Financial Health and Increase Funding Opportunities
Atlanta Humane has a commitment to helping as many animals in need as possible. This requires resources, outstanding stewardship, the strength of operations to maximize resources, and the expansion of funding opportunities.
