We recently started a program that allows adoptable dogs to be put into temporary foster homes where they can look for families outside of the shelter. This program, currently just open to current volunteers and foster homes, gives dogs who have been in our care for a few weeks the chance to get out and about in the city. It also provides us the chance to get to know them a bit better so we can place them into the perfect home. One of the dogs currently enjoying a foster getaway is Banjo. And, this weekend, we caught up with her foster mom to see how Banjo was enjoying her adventures in Atlanta looking for a new home.

“I WISH I could have a dog but as a single flight attendant it is almost impossible. I am usually either flying for work or for pleasure. However, there are times that I am off work for 3, 4, or 5 days in a row. My situation provides the unique opportunity of being able to give a dog who has been in the shelter for a long period of time a break (a STAYcation as I call it). Getting these dogs out and about around the city only increases their chances of being seen by the right person!

Before I brought Banjo home, I gave her a bath. I don’t know the last time she got one, but I do know she LOVED it! Post bath she sprinted around the play area in pure doggie JOY!! I only wish I had videotaped it.

Banjo and I have already been all over the city. She has been on multiple walks around the Beltline and on two runs with me. She is learning how to be on a leash very well and will make a GREAT running partner. We have been to Home Depot where she almost got herself adopted twice (thanks to her ADOPT ME NOW vest)! She has also been on the Jackson St. bridge, and she walked the Freedom Path.

Giving these ‘resident’ dogs a break from shelter life is wonderful even if it is just for a few days. I feel like it boosts their spirits and in Banjo’s case she will hopefully come back drained of her much pent-up energy, and frankly a more connected and better trained dog.

I’m hoping she won’t have to come back to the shelter at all, and her new family will meet her out and about in the city!”

Banjo has been adopted! There are dozens of more dogs waiting to meet you. View our adoptable dogs.
