Gremlin, a tiny, senior dog, was found as a stray in terrible condition. She was covered in thick, matted fur and had a foul-smelling bandage around one of her front paws. When our Shelter Medicine Team attempted to remove the bandage, they found that the tight mats were cutting off circulation in her paw and causing the tissue to become necrotic. The injury was so severe that amputation was necessary.

No dog deserves to live like this. And when you give right now, your donation will be doubled to help animals like Gremlin.

Your Gift Matched: All donations—up to $50,000—will be doubled right now thanks to a generous matching opportunity from Purina.

commander email

When Commander came to our doors, our Shelter Medicine Team was shocked. This sweet 8-month-old puppy was extremely underweight, with every rib, vertebrae, and hip bone easily visible, and was missing fur in large spots on his legs. Our team also discovered that he had an upper respiratory infection that had gone untreated. He had significant nasal discharge and began to develop a concerning cough.

Our expert Shelter Medicine Team was able to nurse Commander back to health. Soon, this brave pup perked up and his happy, playful self emerged.

There are many more animals like Commander who need a second chance at a healthy, safe life. Your generosity helps to rescue dogs and cats—giving them shelter, veterinary care, and new families to love them! Together, we can heal the wounds of homeless animals and alleviate the financial burden faced by pet owners in our community.

dasher before
dasher after

We first met Dasher after she had been abandoned in a crate.

Confined and left to starve at Westside Park, Dasher’s ribs, spine, and hip bones were all visible. She lacked both body fat and muscle, and cowered in her kennel when anyone walked by.

Our community of animal lovers stepped up for Dasher immediately after hearing her story and today, we couldn’t be happier to share the positive news. Over the past couple of months, Dasher put on much-needed weight and gained trust in humans again. And now, she’s living the good life in her forever home with an adopter who loves her.

Cooper has been in constant pain.

When this 10-month-old puppy came into our care, our Shelter Medicine Team determined that he has a disease that causes pain in his hips.

He just underwent an invasive surgical procedure to restore pain-free mobility in his right hip and, once he recovers, will need another surgery to repair his left hip.

No puppy should be in pain and unable to play while they recover from multiple surgeries. But when you give right now, you’ll ensure that Cooper receives all of the medical care he deserves.

Meet Finn, a Plott hound mix who can’t wait to find his people!

Are you hoping to go on more walks this year? Finn sure is, and he hopes you’ll take him with you so you can explore together. Chase is his favorite game, but he needs a forever family to play with him!

When you’re not playing chase or going for long walks, Finn is happy to just sit next to you and enjoy your time together. He’s very polite, and his manners are sure to impress. He’s both crate and potty trained.

Finn may seem a little shy at first, but this guy will warm up to you once you give him a chance. We all need time to adjust to new environments! He also finds that loud noises are scary, so a family that is patient and respects his fear will be ideal for him. He prefers a quiet home with no children.

Nobody likes going to the doctor, and Finn is no different! He needs to be sedated for vet visits so that he can get all the care he needs without having to worry about the scary strangers he encounters there. With a little planning, this can be easily managed by his new family.

Finn is sweet, relatable, and active. If you think he’s the one for you, stop by to meet him at our Alpharetta location. You can also take him home for up to two weeks through our Foster First program before officially adopting him.

If you’re like most pet parents, you probably brush your own teeth daily for fresh breath and to avoid a painful visit to the dentist. But how often do you think about your pet’s dental health? If you’ve never given Fluffy a good dental cleaning, that’s okay – you’re not alone. Only an estimated 4% of cat owners and 8% of dog owners brush their pets’ teeth. Yikes!

The good news is it’s never too late to pick up good habits.

Why does pet dental health matter?

Caring for your pet’s oral hygiene is about much more than bad breath (though, stinky breath can certainly be a sign of dental disease!). Without regular attention, your pet’s teeth can accumulate plaque, which can then turn into hard, yellow tartar. Tartar attracts bacteria, which can in turn lead to the development of oral abscesses, loose teeth, and inflamed gums that are painful and can prevent your pet from eating and playing as they normally do.

Detecting and treating tartar earlier will prevent these serious dental problems, saving your pet from unnecessary pain and you from an expensive trip to the emergency room. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, you should have your pet’s teeth evaluated at least once a year by your vet. Your vet may even recommend a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia to remove tartar.

What can I do at home to keep my pet’s teeth healthy?

Aside from regular vet visits, here are some other steps you can take at home to keep your pet’s teeth strong and healthy:

Brush those teeth: Experts recommend daily brushing for your pet — but if that seems like a tall order, strive for at least three times per week. Here’s a video with some tips on brushing your dog’s teeth, and here’s another version for cat owners.

Invest in some pet toothpaste: Save the Colgate for yourself. Human toothpaste is toxic to cats and dogs. Your pet needs pet-safe toothpaste, which you can buy at any pet store. The great thing about pet toothpaste is that comes in yummy flavors like chicken and beef that will make brushing a treat!

Supplement with dental treats and toys: In addition to tooth brushing, there are other things you can consider to keep those pearly whites, well, pearly. This includes treats, chew toys, special liquid drops you can add into your pet’s water dish, and oral gels. Check out the Veterinary Oral Health Council’s website for a list of council-approved products that are proven to tackle plaque and tartar.

Look out for red flags: If your pet shows symptoms such as decreased appetite, excess drooling, foul breath, or bleeding from the mouth, make an appointment with your vet as these could be signs of serious dental disease.

If you have further questions about your pet’s dental health or want specific recommendations, reach out to your veterinarian. Happy brushing!

Meet Kiki, a super smart girl who loves learning!

With a dedicated passion for treats, Kiki makes for the perfect training partner. She already knows basic commands like “sit” and “down,” but she wants to learn so much more. Continuing training classes with her will be a great way to build a strong bond with Kiki. Our team has been helping her to focus more so that when her perfect family comes along, she’ll be ready to impress them.

Aside from learning how to be the best dog for you, Kiki loves staying active. She’s an exuberant girl who has never met a tennis ball she didn’t love. And if you have a backyard for playing fetch and bouncing around, she’ll be in heaven!

Kiki’s ideal family is one that is active, patient, and experienced. Since she’s so smart, she’ll be looking to you to ensure that she’s physically and mentally stimulated through exercise, toys, training and, most importantly, love! We don’t know Kiki’s history with other dogs, but she has shown some reactivity while at the shelter. If you already have a dog in your home, our Adoptions Team can help facilitate a meet and greet to see how she would get along with them.

Kiki is a fun dog with a great smile, and we know she’ll be smiling even more when she finds her forever home. Kiki is available for adoption at our new Atlanta location and qualifies for Foster First, which means you can take her home for up to 14 days to make sure she’s a perfect fit for you.

Meet Capri, a young bulldog mix who just wants to play!

Capri’s favorite things in the world are toys—especially plush ones with loud squeakers inside. She loves to play with them outside and will even carry them around with her when she goes for walks.

She’d love to share her toys with an active person who can keep up with her needs. Capri has a lot of energy, which means she’d make the ideal running or hiking partner for anyone looking to spend more time outside this year.

When you’re not out on the move together, Capri would love to take some basic training classes with you. While she’s doing a great job picking up leash-walking skills in the shelter, she needs a committed, experienced owner who can continue working with her on a consistent basis. She would benefit from classes that teach her to not jump on people and bite her leash when she’s excited. But Capri is eager to please and can’t wait to learn more!

Stop by our Alpharetta location to come meet her yourself! Capri also qualifies for our Foster First program, meaning you can take her home with you to know for sure that she’s the perfect fit for you before making it official.

Meet Joelyn, a sweet girl who is on a self-love journey to gain more confidence.

Joelyn can be shy around new people and is a bit nervous about the world in general. Going outside and walking on a leash can be scary, but our team has been working with her every day and she seems to be making great strides. It helps that we make sure to tell her how beautiful she is each and every day!

When Joelyn is relaxed and comfortable, her personality really shines through. She enjoys running around the play yard, exploring her surroundings, and showing off her zoomies. She even checks in with staff, which shows her trust in our team, and will seek attention from those she loves.

Joelyn is looking for a quiet home without other dogs and small children. She appreciates a controlled environment without quick movements and loud noises that scare her! Joelyn would also love a fenced-in yard or other area to call her own, and she promises to be a total love bug once she finds her forever family.

If you’re interested in adopting Joelyn, click below to fill out a pre-adoption application to meet her. She also qualifies for our Foster First Program, which means you can take her home for two weeks prior to finalizing her adoption to ensure she’s a good fit for your lifestyle.
