Aspen 20240919 DSC05196

Hi there, I’m Aspen, and I’ve got to tell you about one of the most important things in my life—my plush pickle toy! Now, you might be thinking, “Aspen, it’s just a toy,” but trust me, it’s so much more than that. My pickle and I have been through a lot together, and I’d take it everywhere if I could. So, let me tell you all about the places I dream of taking my beloved pickle toy!

To learn more about Aspen, click here.

1. The Backyard Jungle

To some, it might look like just a yard, but to me and my pickle, it’s an untamed jungle. I sniff the air, check out the trees, and pretend we’re on an epic adventure, me and my pickle fighting off imaginary creatures (well, maybe just the occasional squirrel). The best part is when I lay in the sun and chew on my toy—nothing beats a peaceful day of exploration and relaxation.

2. The Ultimate Snuggle Spot (aka The Couch)

After a long backyard expedition, it’s time to bring my pickle to the ultimate snuggle spot: the couch. There’s nothing like curling up on a soft, comfy couch with my favorite humans and my trusty pickle. I love laying my head on it while we watch TV or even just chill out together. And if you’re sitting there? Don’t worry, I’ll make room for you, but the pickle and I get the best spots!

3. The Bed Fortress

When it’s bedtime, the pickle and I head to my bed, which is more than just a place to sleep—it’s my fortress. I like to build a cozy little fort with blankets and pillows, where my pickle and I can drift off to sleep after a long day of fun.

4. The Splash Pad Extravaganza

Now, this one’s a big dream of mine—taking my pickle to the splash pad at the shelter! I love splashing around in the water, and I bet my pickle would have a blast, too. Can you imagine the fun we’d have? Me running through the water with my toy, both of us getting soaked—it would be the best day ever. And after all that play, we’d dry off and relax in the sun. The perfect adventure!

6. The Forever Home

Finally, the most special place I’d take my pickle—my forever home. I dream of the day I can pack up my plush pickle and move into a place where I can stay forever with my new family. There, I’d show my pickle all the best spots: a new backyard to explore, a cozy couch to snuggle on, and a warm bed to sleep in every night. Together, we’d make new memories, and I know my pickle would be as happy as I’d be.

Grooming isn’t just about keeping your pet looking their best—it’s an essential part of their overall health and well-being. Regular grooming can help prevent a range of health issues and is also a great opportunity to bond with your pet. Whether you have a dog, cat, or another furry friend, here’s what you need to know about keeping your pet groomed and healthy.

Why Grooming is Important

Regular grooming is about more than just appearance. Here are a few key reasons why grooming is important for your pet:

  • Skin and Coat Health: Brushing removes dirt, loose fur, and dander, keeping your pet’s coat shiny and reducing shedding. It also stimulates natural oils in their skin, helping maintain a healthy, moisturized coat.
  • Prevents Matting: Matting can cause discomfort, skin irritation, and even infection in pets with long fur. Regular brushing prevents these painful tangles from forming.
  • Detects Health Issues Early: Grooming gives you a chance to check for lumps, bumps, skin irritations, or parasites like fleas and ticks that might otherwise go unnoticed.
  • Nail Health: Overgrown nails can cause pain and affect your pet’s ability to walk properly. Trimming their nails regularly helps prevent discomfort and injury.

Grooming Tips for Dogs

Dogs benefit from a variety of grooming routines, depending on their breed and coat type. Here are a few essentials:

  • Brushing: Regular brushing, ideally once a week, helps remove loose hair and prevents tangling. For short-haired breeds, a soft bristle brush is often enough, while long-haired breeds may need a comb or slicker brush to prevent matting.
  • Bathing: Dogs don’t need to be bathed as frequently as you might think—every 4-6 weeks is usually sufficient unless they get particularly dirty. Always use pet-specific shampoo to avoid irritating their skin.
  • Nail Trimming: Check your dog’s nails every 2-4 weeks. If they start clicking on hard floors, it’s time for a trim. Be cautious to avoid cutting the quick, which can cause bleeding.
  • Ear Cleaning: Regular ear checks and cleanings help prevent infections. Use a vet-recommended cleaner and avoid using cotton swabs deep inside the ear canal.
Grooming Tips for Cats

Cats generally groom themselves, but they can still benefit from regular grooming to keep their coat and skin healthy.

  • Brushing: Even though cats groom themselves, brushing helps reduce shedding and prevents hairballs. Long-haired cats should be brushed daily, while short-haired cats can usually be brushed once a week.
  • Nail Trimming: Regular trimming (every 2-3 weeks) is essential. Scratching posts can also help keep their nails from growing too long.
  • Ear and Eye Care: Check your cat’s ears for debris or redness, and clean gently with a vet-recommended ear cleaner. If your cat has watery or crusty eyes, use a damp cloth to wipe them clean.

Monday, October 7, 2024: Our team is home safe.

We’re happy to report that our Disaster Response Team has safely returned after providing crucial aid to areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. In coordination with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), the team distributed water, pet food, and essential supplies to shelters in Augusta, Burke, and Jefferson counties—areas hit hardest by the storm.

Thanks to this effort, shelters are now better equipped to care for animals in need as they continue their recovery. We’re incredibly proud of the team’s hard work and the support from our community that made it all possible.

Thank you for helping us make a difference when it mattered most.

If you haven’t already, it’s not too late to support our Disaster Response Team’s efforts. As Hurricane Milton makes it’s way towards Florida, our team is already in contact with local organizations so we can be prepared to provide help as needed.

Our Disaster Response Team is on the ground right now, providing essential aid to animals and communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. With severe flooding and power outages still impacting the Southeast, we’re dedicated to helping our state’s shelters and animal facilities recover from the storm’s devastation.

Working in close coordination with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), we’re visiting affected areas to assess damage and offer assistance to shelters in need.

For the past two days, our Disaster Response Team has been focusing on local facilities like Augusta Animal Care and Control, where we’ve already provided medical support and distributed emergency food supplies.

Now, they are headed south to help the communities of Burke and Jefferson counties, where our Community Outreach Team has already delivered food to shelters in need.

Our priority remains to serve and support Georgia’s animals and families during this challenging time, ensuring they get the help they need right here at home.

If you’d like to help us continue these rescue efforts, please donate now.

Monday, September 30, 2024: We deploy to Augusta tomorrow.

We’re mobilizing to provide support to areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. Tomorrow morning, our Disaster Response Team will depart for Augusta. From there, they will head to the coast and southeastern areas of Georgia to assess damage and coordinate help for animals and communities affected by the storm.

At the same time, our partners from American Humane are staging in Baton Rouge and heading to Waycross, GA. By starting in different locations and working towards each other, Atlanta Humane and American Humane will strategically cover as much impacted territory as possible.

Our team is scheduled to assist with these efforts through the coming weekend, but  this timeline may change based on needs on the ground. Additionally, we may receive secondary assignments after clearing the first wave of territory.

Please donate now to support our deployment. Every dollar counts as we work to bring relief to those suffering in the aftermath of this storm.

Sunday, September 29, 2024: Our team is awaiting an assignment.

As recovery efforts continue in the wake of Hurricane Helene, our thoughts are with those affected by the storm. While lifesaving operations in the hardest-hit areas remain the immediate priority, our Disaster Response Team has been in continuous communication with state and local partners.

The state is still assessing the damage, with over 100 roads in Georgia impassable, and many areas in southern counties remain without power or road access.

Our team is prepared for two possible missions:

  1. Assessment Team: A small team, including a vet, could be deployed to assess facilities and animal needs, report back to state channels, and assist with triage or medical emergencies if needed.
  2. Sheltering Team: If requested, we may assist with daily care for animals at an emergency shelter. The timeline and scope of this mission will depend on the state’s request.

Our team is ready to deploy at any moment, as we expect to have a clear mission assigned soon.

Thank you for your continued support as we remain ready to help animals and communities in need. We will provide further updates as we receive more information.

At the Atlanta Humane Society, we’re grateful to share that our shelter and animals remain safe. Yesterday, 20 animals were placed in temporary foster homes, allowing them to ride out the storm in cozy, loving environments. Our dedicated staff stayed overnight to care for the remaining animals, ensuring they were safe and comfortable throughout the night.

Our building weathered the storm well—there’s some standing water in the walking trail and sensory garden, but we’re happy to report that the building stayed dry, and we never lost power.

Additionally, our Disaster Response Team is still in close contact with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and awaiting assignments to deploy and assist communities in need once it’s safe to do so.

Thank you to our incredible team, fosters, and supporters for helping us keep our animals safe. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates!

Thursday, September 26, 2024

With Hurricane Helene approaching, the Atlanta Humane Society will close to the public at 3 PM today. Our incredible team will stay overnight to care for all the animals, including a group of sweet puppies currently fighting parvo. We’ve taken every step to prepare, ensuring our animals are safe and our staff is ready.

Our Disaster Response Team has been on daily calls with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and are keeping in close communication with our partners across the southeast. Once the storm passes, they are prepared to help rescue animals and bring relief to communities in need.

As we brace for the storm, we’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you updated. Please stay safe.

Animal welfare can sometimes be surrounded by misconceptions that lead to confusion about how best to care for pets or understand how shelters work. In this article, we’ll address some of the most common myths and clarify the reality behind them.

Myth: Humane Societies Are Associated with Each Other, Government-Funded, and/or Can Take in Any Animal

Reality: Many people assume that all humane societies are government-funded or part of a larger national organization, but this is often not the case. For example, our organization operates independently, solely relying on community donations.

Additionally, humane societies like ours are often unable to accept stray animals due to regulations from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. All stray animals must first be reported to the animal control facility in the county in which the animal was found. This gives owners a singular location to check for their lost pets.

Myth: A Dog’s Behavior in the Shelter Always Reflects Its True Personality

Reality: The shelter environment can be overwhelming for dogs, leading to behaviors that might not represent their true nature. Factors like noise, unfamiliar surroundings, and the presence of other animals can cause dogs to feel stressed, which may manifest as anxiety, shyness, or even overexcitement. Once in a calm and stable home, many dogs show different traits, becoming more relaxed and affectionate. This is why it’s important not to judge a dog solely based on its shelter behavior.

*This is also why we offer a Foster First option when considering adoption! By choosing to foster first, you give a pet the chance to acclimate to the home before finalizing the adoption.

Myth: Indoor Cats Don’t Need Vaccines or Flea Prevention

Reality: Even cats that live entirely indoors can benefit from vaccinations and flea prevention. Although they may not be exposed to other animals directly, viruses and parasites can still enter the home on shoes, clothing, or through open windows. Diseases like rabies, distemper, and feline leukemia can be prevented with vaccines, and fleas can be an issue even for indoor cats, especially if there are other pets in the home.

Myth: A Dog’s Breed Determines Its Behavior

Reality: While breed can give some general insights into a dog’s temperament or energy level, it’s not a definitive predictor of behavior. Many factors, including upbringing, environment, and individual personality, play a significant role in how a dog behaves. Two dogs of the same breed can have completely different personalities, so it’s essential to evaluate dogs on an individual basis rather than relying solely on breed stereotypes.

Callie

Despite being around one year old, Mimi is the “grandma” of the group. Spiritually strong, this sweet girl was the leader of her pack. Mimi is being treated for heartworm disease, which has likely caused a slightly enlarged pulmonary artery. We are monitoring her closely to provide the treatments she needs to be comfortable and eventually, make a full recovery.

Callie was found laying in a pile of trash, with an open wound between her eyes. Our dedicated Shelter Medicine Team is giving her the care she needs to be healthy, strong, and adoptable very soon.

These 2-week old puppies were found trapped under a trailer on the property. They are currently in a foster home, being bottle-fed and receiving around-the-clock care.

Please, donate today to help provide the immediate care, love, and safety they’ve been denied for so long.

Update as of September 24, 2024:

When we were contacted about a heartbreaking situation at a property where dogs and puppies were suffering, our Animal Protection Unit deployed to bring them to safety.

We were able to rescue 10 adult dogs and 8 vulnerable puppies.

These innocent dogs were living among filth, battling fleas, ticks, and open wounds—struggling just to survive. They are safe now but they are still in desperate need of medical care, and they need it now.

Please, donate today to help provide the immediate care, love, and safety they’ve been denied for so long.

We are facing an emergency.

Our team is deploying to Dade County on Monday, where countless animals are living in heartbreaking conditions. But with our shelter already at full capacity, we cannot bring these animals back into our care without your help.

We urgently need foster families to step up and take in animals already in our care to free up space—or to sign up to foster these newly rescued animals.

If you would be new to fostering, please click here to get started. To view animals in our care who are currently looking for foster homes, click here.

If you can’t foster, please make a donation so we can continue to be there for animals who need us the most.

Tips from an Expert Explorer

If anyone knows how to turn a home into a cat’s paradise, it’s Duncan, the coolest cat on the block. With his confident swagger and adventurous spirit, Duncan is the ultimate expert on creating the perfect cat playground.

Here’s how he does it, along with some top tips for cat owners looking to design a stimulating environment for their feline friends.

Hero Template
1. The Ultimate Cat Tree

Duncan’s first stop on his playground tour is the cat tree. For Duncan, this is more than just a piece of furniture—it’s his personal lookout tower and playground all in one. A tall, multi-level cat tree provides plenty of climbing opportunities, scratching posts, and cozy spots for napping. Duncan recommends finding a sturdy cat tree that can withstand his enthusiastic climbing and play sessions.

2. Interactive Toys Galore

When it comes to toys, Duncan knows variety is key. From feather wands to laser pointers, interactive toys keep Duncan engaged and entertained. He advises having a selection of toys that cater to different play styles, whether it’s pouncing, chasing, or batting. Toys that stimulate Duncan’s natural hunting instincts are a must-have for any playful feline.

3. Cozy Hideaways

Every explorer needs a good hideout, and Duncan is no exception. Cozy hideaways, such as soft cat beds, igloos, or cardboard boxes, provide Duncan with the perfect spots to retreat and relax. These hideaways offer security and comfort, giving Duncan a place to unwind after a day of exploring.

4. Treats and Snack Stations

No playground is complete without a snack station, according to Duncan. He suggests setting up a designated area for treats and snacks, making it easy for him to indulge in his favorite goodies. Treat-dispensing toys can also add an extra layer of fun, combining playtime with a tasty reward.

5. Window Perches and Views

For Duncan, the view from a window perch is one of the best parts of his playground. A window perch or cat hammock allows Duncan to observe the outside world, from birds and squirrels to passing cars. He recommends positioning these perches where your cat can enjoy a sunny spot and a view of the neighborhood.

6. Engaging Climbing Paths

Duncan’s playground includes various climbing paths and shelves that allow him to explore vertical spaces. Cat shelves and climbing structures provide Duncan with the opportunity to jump, climb, and survey his territory from different vantage points. These climbing paths keep him active and mentally stimulated.

7. Regular Playtime Sessions

Finally, Duncan emphasizes the importance of regular playtime. Engaging in interactive play sessions with his humans keeps him happy and healthy. Duncan suggests setting aside time each day for play, ensuring that his adventurous spirit is always satisfied.

With these expert tips from Duncan, creating the ultimate cat playground is easy. By incorporating climbing structures, interactive toys, cozy hideaways, and engaging play sessions, cat owners can turn their home into a feline wonderland that caters to their cat’s adventurous and playful nature. Duncan’s guide proves that with a little creativity and attention to detail, any space can become the perfect playground for an explorer like him.
