If you are a fourth-year veterinary student considering a career in shelter medicine, becoming a high-quality high-volume (HQHV) spay/neuter surgeon, or simply want to learn more about how you can help the homeless pet overpopulation, the Atlanta Humane Society provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to animal welfare issues.

Our Shelter Medicine Veterinary Externship Program provides fourth-year veterinary students hands-on experience with shelter medicine and an HQHV spay/neuter program at our Alpharetta locationAs an extern, you’ll be providing care and services to the shelter animals, foster animals, and our partner organizations’ animals.

Under the guidance of our veterinarians, you will:

  • Perform spay/neuter surgeries and other surgical procedures (depending on prior surgical experience)
  • Practice shelter medicine for the animals in our care
  • Conduct foster appointments

You will also be working alongside a team who adheres to the ASV Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters and work in a well-equipped facility with access to a digital radiograph machine and in-house blood work.
