Harriet

I have great news that’s also quite urgent —

Our extraordinarily committed friends Charles and Virginia Bagley created a designated fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta in order to benefit the Atlanta Humane Society in perpetuity. Their generosity is enabling a match up to $250,000 for every dollar you give by September 30.

If you want to help, there is no better time than right now.

Our shelter is bursting at the seams with dogs and cats like little Harriet, the dog shown above. Harriet was surrendered with her whole family — her mom, dad and her brother. Her skin was so raw and scabbed that it was hard to tell what kind of animal she was. Their owner was no longer able to care for them and was at a loss as to how to handle their medical issues.

A quick diagnostic test confirmed that the whole family had demodectic mange, but Harriet’s was by far the worst. She was miserable and had been for some time. At 8 weeks old, she weighed less than two pounds and was covered head-to-tail in itchy, painful sores. Her skin was hot to the touch because of the infection, and she needed immediate medical attention. Her feet and belly were raw, and she shivered with chills.

Our Shelter Medicine Team immediately gave her medication for her skin condition and found the perfect foster home for her to heal. She received warm, soothing baths and antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection.

With the love and extra special care of her foster mom, Harriet began to eat and feel better, and she began to thrive. In just a short time, she became a playful pup who loves attention. Once Harriet was ready, she was adopted into a loving home where she is a beloved part of the family. Life wasn’t kind to Harriet before she came to AHS, but with your support, she received more care and love than she could have ever imagined.

On any given day, we typically care for 400 animals like Harriet — and in a year, we provide more than 60,000 services for these animals. They require varying degrees of treatment, from simple vaccinations to lifesaving surgery and extended periods of therapy. As each animal heals and waits for adoption, we’ll meet whatever other needs they have, too. But as you can imagine, the expenses really add up!

That’s why we depend on caring people like you — and why I urge you not to miss the chance to have your gift matched dollar for dollar today.

It’s critical we receive your gift by the deadline of September 30 so we receive the matching funds.

Thank you in advance for saving so many animals. I look forward to sharing more of their stories with you in the weeks ahead.

Donate securely online and have your gift go twice as far.

Gratefully,
