Now that the back to school trek is in full effect, it can be easy to forget that the needs of the family dog or cat are a part of the picture as well. Before you get into the hustle & bustle of the “get them to school” shuffle, here are some ways to make sure the bases are covered for your four-legged family members:

For Both Cats & Dogs:

  • Your animals need to have their health checked out as well! They may need updated vaccinations – just like kids.
  • Animals need to have regular feeding and exercise, too!
  • Have healthy snacks on hand so pets don’t feel left out.
  • Be on the lookout for hawks if you have small dogs or cats that are indoor and outdoor.

For Dogs:

  • Make sure your dog is on a leash even for the short walk from the front door to the bus stop. This will ensure he/she is safe and under your control at all times.
  • Consider doggie day care to prevent your dog from being left at home alone and possibly becoming bored or destructive

For Cats:

  • Cats – unlike dogs – will be stressed out and scared in day care facilities where they could hear barking dogs and other loud noises.
  • You will want to enrich their home environment so they won’t become bored during the long day at home. Consider the following:
    • A piece of tall cat furniture that will encourage climbing and physical activity. Be mindful of the height, though, if your cat is older, overweight or has impaired eye sight.
    • A CD of bird songs
    • A favorite toy possibly infused with catnip can be a fun and safe diversion.
    • Cats appreciate a clean litterbox but may not appreciate scented litter.

School will soon be back in session (if it hasn’t already started), so have fun with your four-legged family members now!
