HAVE YOU ADOPTED FROM AHS? DO YOU WANT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW HOW SPECIAL YOUR PUP OR KITTY IS?
If you have adopted from the Atlanta Humane Society, we’d love to know. Please send us your pet’s picture and tell us about him or her!
Cagney
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
Cagney, my year-old Australian shepherd/hound mix, deserves an Oscar for her portrayal of a lap dog during my AHS visit. Within an hour of arriving at her forever home, the seemingly shy dog transformed into a bundle of wiggly, energetic, unstoppable glee. Though her change in demeanor took me by surprise, I’m thrilled to have a running partner, comedian and loyal sidekick rolled into one compact, 45-pound package! Cagney is my second AHS dog and if she’s half as good as the first, I’m one lucky dog mother!
Sincerely,
Andrea
Bourbon
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
My girlfriend took me to the Atlanta humane society in July as a birthday surprise. When we got there there were plenty of people happy to aid us in finding the purrrfect addition to our family. We found then called Honey Bunches of Oats and fell in love. When we picked her up she turned into a ball of purring fur in my lap. We immediately knew she was the one for us. Since adoption we have changed her name to Bourbon since she was originally saved from a shelter in New Orleans. She is ball of energy all day till it is time to fall asleep where she wedges herself as close as she can to us in bed. She loves playing with her big brother and sister. We could not have asked for a better experience then we had.
Thank you for all you do for the fury family members and creating loving forever homes.

Georgia Mae
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
A big huge thank you for taking care of our puppy until we found her!! She was just what we were missing and what we needed!! We adopted our sweet girl Georgia Mae (aka Buttercup as you knew her), our 6 month old puppy almost a week ago and we have had so much fun since! She has settled right into our “Girl Palace Tribe.” She has been a great little sister to her older sister Maggie (our 13 year old cocker) and has been quite the playmate for my 3 1/2 year old daughter, Mimi. Mimi calls Georgia “Baby G Dawg” and wants to take her to a Georgia football game to make her a “real G Dawg.” We might pass on that. :)
She has been so amazing for us all!! She loves to ride in the car, run up and down the stairs, play fetch, go for long energetic walks, and most of all cuddle. She is a cuddle bug!! We have a new saying, “If you can’t find Mimi, look under Georgia!” She loves to take naps with us and actually likes for me to rock her to sleep. She lays by my feet while I cook and clean and snoozes on the bath mat while I shower. She is a great listener and so smart too! In no time, she knew her new name, that the leash means go to the back door and that when I say “no” it means stop and sit. She does love to snatch Mimi’s toys and run, but if we don’t chase her, she drops it and comes back as if to say “Did you see what I did there?? Huh??” She plays well with all the other dogs in the neighborhood and is just a great puppy!!
Again thank you for taking care of our sweet baby until she found her forever home with us. The whole experience has been great and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
Thanks so much!
The Girl Palace Tribe (aka Callie, Mimi, Maggie Dog, and Georgia Mae)
Ferguson
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
We adopted our sweet boy, Ferguson on Saturday April 19, 2012. The staff at the Howell Mill location were so sweet and helpful throughout the entire process! Fergus is the second addition to our pack. His sister, Basil, absolutely loves him! They can’t go anywhere without each other, even on walks little Fergus likes to be right next to her. He has even made friends with our cat! He has brought so much happiness (and craziness!) to our family we can’t thank you enough! We are so glad we chose the Atlanta Humane Society!

Shelby
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
Thank you so much for Shelby (Snowblind). We had just recently lost our lab Buddy a few weeks ago. We felt a hole missing in our lives and decided AHS might help us heal. Shelby has been with us since 04/28/2012 and has made herself right at home. She has stolen all the toys and is catching on fast on potty training in only 2 days. We have 3 other male boys and 3 cats. They are warming up to her as much as possible. I have attached a pic of her. Thanks again and god bless…Keep up the great work on finding our furry family members homes….!!!

Carson
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
I moved to Atlanta in November from Orlando, Florida and decided I needed a canine companion! I thought about this decision long and hard, and often visited the Humane Society on Howell Mill to see which pup would be the perfect match! One Saturday, I came with my sister Meghann and there was a brand new litter of puppies. All of them were tan and white but there was one little guy with a black nose and white paws. He was the chubbiest little guy of the bunch and was so friendly! I held him and then visited some other dogs. I kept coming back to little Converse! Eventually, he melted my heart and I had to take him home. It was the best decision I could have made.
As I was driving home from the adoption, I was stopped at the light by my house. It was called Carson Lane! I promptly changed his name from Converse to Carson to remember the first place I lived here in Atlanta. Carson was a little bundle of 5 lbs when I adopted him, and now he’s about 30! We love going to Piedmont Dog Park on a sunny day and meeting other dogs. He’s gone on a few great vacations to Florida to visit his “grandparents,” and is curious and energetic. Everyone who meets him adores him, and his favorite thing is to cuddle and be with me and my family.
I continue to love him more and more everyday. He has brought so much joy to my life and I couldn’t imagine one day without him!
Vivian
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
It is hard to believe that it has been one year since we adopted our sweet puppy, Vivian, who we now call Vivi, from the Atlanta Humane Society’s Howell Mill Road location! My son and my husband had taken a day during my son’s spring break to hang out and do things together, when my husband called and asked me where exactly the AHS was located. I knew that we were in trouble! Our family pet, a sweet yellow labrador named Thor, had passed away almost a year before, and I wasn’t quite ready for a new puppy. However, the rest of the family seemed ready, and willing and able to help. I got another call an hour or so later. It was my husband telling me to come and check out “the most adorable little girl puppy.” So after I picked our daughter up from school, we headed down to AHS to meet Vivian. She was a bundle of energy and very cute!
We adopted her on April 13th. She fit in really well with our family from the beginning, and her routine is pretty much what it was when we brought her home. She gets up in the morning with her Daddy and has breakfast, then she wakes up my son by running from the kitchen to his bedroom, leaping into his bed, landing on his head and kissing his ears! He loves waking up in the morning with Vivi there to greet him! She takes this duty very seriously too. She waits every morning for me to open the door from the family room/kitchen so she can run and get him up! After the kids are dropped off at school, we take a long walk every day. On the weekends, my husband will run with her, which she loves. Our family has a running joke that she is “daddy’s little girl.” Usually she will take a rest while I run errands, and when I get back, she finds her favorite sunny spot in the family room, and lays down right in the middle to take her sunbath! In the evening, she likes to lay on my daughter’s bed while my daughter reads her book before she goes to sleep. It is the only time of the day she is truly calm and quiet. She also loves to snuggle in our laps like a little puppy while we watch movies or television. We are so glad to have Vivi in our lives and are very grateful to the folks at the Atlanta Humane Society for rescuing her and taking such good care of her!
Bev
Dotty
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
This is my Dotty. I adopted her in October of 2011 from the Atlanta Humane Society.
I saw a bumper sticker once that had a paw print followed by the question, “Who rescued who”. Once you bring home a shelter pet you will understand the power in that statement.
I have absolutely fallen in love with her. After adopting from the Humane Society, I will never buy a “full-blooded” breed again. These shelter pets have a special appreciation and love for life that no other possesses. I’m so grateful that she is in my life.

Wyatt
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
We are writing to thank you for the amazing new addition to our family “quiet Wyatt.” We adopted Wyatt January 9th. When we first met Wyatt, he had been at Atlanta Humane almost 6 months. He was scared. He wouldn’t play with anyone or leave the corner of his kennel, but we decided he needed someone to love him and spend some time with him. Once he was home, it took lots of time and patience. He would barely leave one corner of one room. It took a long time for him to know he was home.
It’s been 2 months and Wyatt is a whole new dog. He loves to cuddle, play in the yard, play with his toys, and lay on his blanket. Wyatt is safe and happy.
Thank you so much!

Zoey
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
My dad, Jason, picked up a dog from the “Atlanta Humane Society” on 2/20/12. The dog was named “Me – Maw.’ We quickly changed the name to Zoey. When Zoey got here she was shaking and wouldn’t eat or drink. Then around 8pm she was drinking and drinking, but still wouldn’t eat. I would have to feed Zoey by hand for her to eat. After a few hours you can kind of see her real personality. Now, she is running, loves to chew, and play. I describe her as a adventurer because when it is time for her to go to bed in her cage she wants to explore the house. She is a very healthy and energetic dog, but at other times she is very calm, and loving. She hardly ever barks! The first morning she threw up a lot. Vet experts say that’s normal because she is not use to a new home. Now she is feeling a lot better. Our whole family loves to play with her, and take care of her! We have even gotten her to eat out of her bowl now! I have to give a special thanks to the “Atlanta Humane Society”
Ya’ll Rock!

Hope
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,

Hi, My name is Mariana. Me and my boyfriend walked into the Howell Mill shelter looking for a good companion for our 80 pound rescued Lab mix on October 1st 2011. We saw Hope (a.k.a Frankie) and his brother Fido in one of the puppies’ kennels. He came to us immediately and started kissing our hands and faces. Frankie was so friendly and such a happy little dog since the beginning. We always had hope that we would eventually find the right friend for our big girl, Georgia and we couldn’t have found a better one. That’s why Frankie is known as Hope now a days and he is Georgia’s best friend. They are inseparable and we can’t imagine life without Hope. We are very fortunate to have him in our lives and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world when he cuddles with me in the couch while we watch our favorite tv shows. Hope LOVES to play catch, he knows how to shake, roll over and he is an agility star. He can’t wait to start his agility classes this Summer.
Thank you so much to the AHS for the great job you do in giving these animals another chance in life.
Hugs and licks, Mariana, Eric, Georgia and Hope!
Sandy
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
Sandy was adopted in 2003 and Kizzie was added to the family in 2005 as a companion dog. Sandy, left, is very energetic and intelligent and likes to spend most of days on patrol for intruders, rabbits, falling leaves, and birds. Her hobbies include barking, watching television, and splashing water in her kiddie pool. Sandy really enjoys playing fetch with squeaky toys and frisbees. Kizzie, right, is much more laid back. She enjoys napping, gnawing on rawhide, howling, and curling up on furniture. She loves to snatch Sandy’s toys and run away.
Coincidentally, both dogs were originally names “Susie” by AHS. They love running, going on walks, and going for rides together. Sandy and Kizzie keep me laughing with their quirks and antics. They make great companions, and they are part of the family.
Sincerely,
Brina Hargro
Tyko
Hi!
I just wanted to share with you Tyko’s story! Formerly Walter, he was adopted in August 2010. He was definitely a cute little guy. We checked out all of the amazing puppies and older dogs & kept going back to him. It seemed everyone in the place was drawn to him. There was surely something about his big bat ears and wrinkly forehead that was telling me to take him home. So after some convincing, my boyfriend agreed. He hasn’t left our side since. We weren’t sure what breed he was, until one day, he began singing to a song. Bingo, he is surely mixed with some sort of Basenji & we love his strange character. We would like to thank AHS and the woman who worked there and fostered him through his respiratory issues as a pup. Our lives have forever been changed!
Included below is a link to a video of him singing!

Tabbytha
Dear friends at AHS at Mansell,
Our names are Tabbytha and Monet (next image) respectively and we were adopted by our new parents on Sunday, January 8, 2012.
Our parents were amazed at how clean and open the location was and how friendly everyone was to them while they were visiting. One of the volunteers hinted that it was a “special” weekend and that they could adopt both of us for the same price as one which just made it easier since they didn’t have to choose between us! Everyone there was very eager to answer any questions that they had about us and gave us as much time as needed to see how absolutely precious we both were.
We have settled into our new home and have quickly made ourselves very comfortable in our new surroundings. We just had our first official vet visit and got a clean bill of health! We share our home with an older brother cat who is 8 years old and was a ferel cat that was taken in by our parents when he was a kitten. We miss our other friends and litter mates back at the Mansell location but we feel we have hit the “kitty lottery” by being adopted! We tried to convince our parents that we needed to have some nice open glass rooms built for us like they have at Mansell, but looks like we may have to settle for a kitty condo scratching tower.
Tell all our friends hello and we will cross our kitty paws and toes that our friends are adopted soon.
Kitty kisses and hugs,
Gary & Angie
Mimsy
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
When I went to adopt a kitty in April of 2010, I was hoping to find a cat who was affectionate and liked to play. I dragged my then new boyfriend along with me, and he helped me choose. I liked the coat of one cat named Britney Spears, but he was drawn to the small, black, fluffy, whining, energetic kitten across the room. He convinced me that this kitten was superior to Britney and we took him home. We named him Mimsy from a South Park episode, and almost two years later Mimsy is still making us laugh! I also got my wish for an affectionate cat–he’s the most lovable, even-tempered kitty who ALWAYS wants to be petted. The picture is of Mimsy shoving his way between us on the couch.
Thanks AHS for a wonderful friend!

Precious
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
We adopted Precious a/k/a ‘Lil Mama on 3/12/11. From the first, she has been a beautiful dog. To whomever gave her up for adoption, we thank you. If you think about her and worry – do not. She has a new family who loves and needs her. She is perfect!!! She remains a bit skittish, but is warming up to our friends and family who visit. She is becoming quite the hostess. She is particularly fond of her Papa, who was the spur to us adopting her on the first day she was available. We think that she was calling to us as soon as she came to AHS. We really hadn’t considered another dog since losing our previous dachshund 25 years ago until the few days before she was up for adoption. We love her so and she will be with us forever.
Sundance
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
We adopted Sundance last October and were a little unsure if she would make a good pet. She was very scared and did not want to socialize much. When we first saw her, the tag said large dog so we just passed her up. We came back a week later and she was still there looking scared in the cage. We were suprised to see that she had not been taken. So we decided to get her. When we went to the counter the lady said she would be a big dog, but I did not think so, yet she insisted she would, so we walked away. We came back another two weeks later and she was still there and did not get any bigger. I emailed photos to a vet friend and they said she probably was done growing but would fill out a little. When we came back and she was still there we decided to adopt our daughter!
Well, a year later she is a happy pup and loves to play with other pups! Everyone loves her at the dog park and she is just happy to be out of the cage. She is still shy around adults but getting better. We are now thinking of getting her a baby brother or sister.
Thanks for having this place for people to adopt all these needy animals!!!

Milo
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
We adopted Milo (formerly named Poncho) on September 9, 2011. We fell in love the moment we locked eyes with this 3 month, brindle puppy at the Atlanta Humane Society, and knew he was the one for us. The adoption process was quick, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. I had to reassure one of the staff members we would take great care of Milo- you could hear it in her voice how much she cared for all the puppies. Since the adoption, Milo quickly became the center of attention. I mean, how can you say no to that face? We know he is spoiled rotten, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! He knows how to sit, stay, lay down, shake, and loves his big, comfy crate. He loves to play with his friends in our apartment complex (most of them were adopted from the Humane Society too!), and looks forward to his weekends spent at Piedmont Park! He longs for car rides, playing with his toys, snacking on carrots and peanut butter, and snuggling on the couch with a good belly rub at the end of the day. He has the sweetest personality, is full of life and adventure, and he is truly my “soulmut.” We couldn’t be happier with him in our lives. Thank you so much to the Atlanta Humane Society for completing our little family!
With all our love,
Jacquelyn, Jonathan and Milo
Bryan Adams
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
My name is Amanda and my fiancee Michael and I adopted Bryan Adams on 12/12/11. Our experience with adopting was amazing. Everyone was helpful in getting us all set up and making sure you’re making the right decision and choosing the right puppy/dog/cat. The environment was so clean and organized.
Bryan Adams has been an amazing addition to our family, he has an older sister who is a mastiff pit mix and they are playing along together, he’s very protective of us if someone comes near us, he does his little cute bark. It is so cute. he sleeps on the bed with us and just has been the best addition someone could ask for.
Thanks,
Mandi L.
