Animal Admission Specialist – Howell Mill Campus
Provides humane care for sheltered animals by feeding and caring for animals, cleaning and maintaining kennel facilities and providing information regarding animal care and department services. Provides quality animal and customer service in accordance with the Society’s mission, goals and philosophy.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides intake animals with adequate food and water on a daily basis in a timely manner
- Observes animals to ensure proper feeding and reports any signs of illness or behavioral problems to Supervisor on duty
- Assists in stocking food and all supplies as needed
- Checks and updates animal feed and medication sheets throughout the day to ensure animals are fed and medicated properly or seen by the veterinarian on duty as necessary in assigned sections
- Provides constant humane care and handling of the animals in intake areas
- Examines, vaccinates, microchips and tags animals evaluated for adoption
- Updates animal records in Pet Point computer program
- May take pictures and provide bio information on animals
- Scans animals for microchips
- Observes health of intake animals and reports any symptoms requiring medical attention
- Cleans and sanitizes animal kennels during morning cleaning for disease control Conducts routine “spot” checks and cleaning throughout the day
- Maintains a clean and safe environment for the animals and the public at all times
- Maintains cleaning equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety for use
- Reports any damaged equipment or need for repair to Supervisor on duty
- Assists in stocking cleaning supplies and washing laundry as needed
- Maintains all necessary documentation of drug usage
- Ensures quality customer service to patrons who visit or call the shelter
- Seeks assistance from management staff for situations that require immediate problem solving techniques
- Avoids creating situations that are potentially damaging to the professional image of the Society
- Works closely with department staff and volunteers to accomplish departmental and Society goals
- Fosters teamwork and provides assistance to department staff and volunteers
- Interacts with other departments as needed to provide information on intake animals
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Basic computer knowledge in a Windows environment
- Obtain certificate as certified euthanasia technician within 12 months of hire
- Six months experience as an Animal Intake Specialist or related position in an animal shelter or animal care environment
- Requires humane handling of animals and the safe handling of cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment in compliance with safety rules and in accordance with MSDS rules
- Knowledge of animal diseases, medications and treatment protocols
- Handle agency funds in accordance with established verbal and written agency guidelines
- Works in a high noise level area
- Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping and lifting up to 75 lbs. with reasonable accommodations.
- Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times

Animal Care Specialist – Mansell Campus

SUV Veterinary Assistant
On the Surgery Utility Vehicle (SUV) Low Cost Mobile Spay/Neuter Unit, performs a variety of animal health care duties. The Atlanta Humane Society is looking for a Vet Assistant with extensive experience in a high volume surgical environment. The right candidate will be a self-starter who is able to work with limited supervision and communicate effectively with different members of the medical and management teams about the organization’s surgical needs and procedures. We are looking for an organized, detail-oriented individual who is comfortable taking on challenges in our exciting, fast-paced facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in checking animals, performing physical exams, giving vaccinations, taking blood, and performing fecal exams
- Enters required information into the computer database
- Sterilizes surgical instruments
- Educates pet owners on proper animal health care
- Calculates drug doses, pre-medicate, scrub, monitor anesthesia, recover animals
- Performs any other duties assigned
Qualifications
- Prior experience in a similar environment working with animals
- Must be able to restrain and handle large animals

Registered Veterinary Technician
The Atlanta Humane Society is looking for an RVT with extensive experience in a high volume surgical environment. The right candidate will be a self-starter who is able to work with limited supervision and communicate effectively with different members of the medical and management teams about the organization’s surgical needs and procedures. We are looking for an organized, detail-oriented RVT who is comfortable giving direction and taking on challenges in our exciting, fast-paced facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in checking animals, performing physical exams, giving vaccinations, taking blood, and performing fecal exams
- Educate pet owners on proper animal health care
- Enter required information into the computer
- Sterilize surgical instruments
- Calculate drug doses, pre-medicate, induce and intubate and scrub, monitor anesthesia, recover animals
- Assist with outpatient clinic and surgery as assigned
- Prepare exam for doctor
- See clients that do not require doctor
- Assist with time management in surgery
- Manage blood work
- Oversee intubation in surgery
- Proficient in placing intravenous catheters
- Fill prescriptions for doctor
- Assist in emergency situations
- Assists restraining animals for euthanasia
- Perform euthanasia as needed
- Substitutes on SUV as needed
- Perform any other duties assigned including duties such as cleaning and laundry
Qualifications & Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program
- Active Georgia license required
- Prior experience in a similar environment working with animals
- Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 75lbs, with reasonable accommodations
- Must be able to restrain and handle large animals
